These are the teachings that show the wonderful and extraordinary. The section on determination is: through determining all dharmas by their own and common characteristics, they correctly show the meaning of the Sutras and so on. Third, dividing from the perspective of antidotes, there are three pitakas: the common definition, the individual characteristics, and the reason for establishing the three pitakas. First, in Sanskrit, it is called Pitaka. When translated, it means "heap" or "collection." Because all dharmas that should be known or dharmas that should be learned are contained in this expression, it is called a "pitaka." For example, just as in the great city of Magadha, many small baskets are gathered together, or it is named "container" because of the meaning of containing. There is nothing in these three pitakas that does not contain the meaning and collection of words of the twelve branches of scripture, so it is called a "pitaka." Therefore, if it is connected to the support and the supported, Master Vasubandhu said, "Or, from the dharmas of the skandhas, dhatus, and ayatanas, to the body and wisdom, etc., all the meanings that should be known are contained, therefore it is called a pitaka." How are they collected? First, the first five are the Sravaka Sutra Pitaka, and the middle three are the Sravaka Vinaya. Among them, the section on the basis of discussion is the main way because it shows the transgressions and trainings; the section on expressing realization and the section on such events are its assistants, so they are considered to be the retinue. Among the last four, the Jataka section is the retinue of the Bodhisattva Vinaya Pitaka, the extensive and wonderful sections are the Bodhisattva Sutra Pitaka, and the determination section is the common part of both Sravakas and Bodhisattvas, and is considered to be the Abhidharma Pitaka. For the Pratyekabuddhas, there is no separate pitaka, but they aim at the Sravaka Pitaka. Second, regarding the individual characteristics, there are three aspects: definition, example, and etymology. First, the definition of the Sutra Pitaka is: it belongs to the category of scriptures that mainly explain the training in higher mind.
