On the pure ground, Moistening the mind with hearing and great compassion. Skilled in the rituals of the ocean of Tripitaka and Tantra, Rich with the stainless fruit of renunciation and realization wisdom. The flowers of the four means of gathering are beautifully displayed, Relying on attracting the bees of fortunate disciples. Especially the Lama who shows the essential instructions, Having received empowerment, abiding in vows, extremely peaceful. Understanding the essential meaning of the continuum of base, path, and fruit, Through practice, the signs are complete, and realization liberates one's own mind. Immeasurable compassion, solely accomplishing the benefit of others, Few activities, diligently focused on Dharma. Possessing great renunciation, also urging others to it. Skilled in means, possessing the blessings of the lineage, Relying on such a one, accomplishment is swift. Like a Brahmin, protecting the lineage, or In a pond where there is fear of the dwelling deteriorating, With the fruit of hearing and thinking, bathing in an inappropriate place. Like a guide who is like a wooden self-grinding mill, Although not contradicting the nature of individual beings, Yet with foolish faith, arbitrarily applying to a place. Filled with offerings of gain and respect, Like a spiritual friend who is like a well's winch, Little hearing and learning, discipline and vows are disordered, Low in mind, conduct has fallen to the ground. Severing the rope of love and compassion, From the mad guides, evil increases. Especially if one does not have more qualities than oneself, Abandoning Bodhicitta, relying on the power of fame, Like a blind man leading, great loss, Futile association, wandering in the darkness. Therefore, if the Lama is not carefully examined, The virtuous deeds of the faithful will be wasted, The one-time opportunity of leisure will be deceived by demons, Like being deceived by the shadow of a tree. The Lama who possesses all qualities, Is the essence of the wisdom and compassion of all Buddhas, For the sake of taming beings, appearing in the form of a person, Is the supreme root of accomplishing all siddhis. In terms of direct meaning, in harmony with all, In terms of definitive meaning, contradictory to all, Because of having secret intentions, superior to all. Skilled in cutting doubts, able to endure evil deeds and fatigue, From the ocean of samsara, Destroying the fire of afflictions, raining down nectar, Dispelling the darkness of ignorance, comparable to the sun and moon, Because the vehicle is extremely great, comparable to the earth, Is the source of benefit and happiness, the wish-fulfilling tree. 148. Possessing the treasure of Dharma.

Is the good mother! More excellent than the wish-fulfilling jewel that is the source of all, treating all beings with equal love. The vast and swift compassion is comparable to the ocean. 149 The unchanging joy is like the king of mountains, and the undisturbed equanimity is like rain clouds. Such a lama is no different from all the Buddhas. Even if harmed, he will not abandon the path of bliss. For the person who relies on him with sincere faith, the merits of high status in this life and ultimate bliss will descend like rain. Just as a sick person relies on a doctor, a guest relies on an escort, a frightened person relies on a helper, and a merchant relies on a guide, 151 Just as a boatman relies on a helmsman, one should rely on the guru out of fear of birth, old age, sickness, death, and the enemies of afflictions. The one who draws near to the guru is the disciple. If the vessel is not suitable, the essence will not be of benefit. 152 Merely being satisfied with material offerings, and after gaining some satisfaction, measuring the changes of the four seasons with false appearances. At first, not entering the path of Dharma, like a wild yak, in the middle, hating listening and contemplation, and pursuing this life. 153 In the end, siding with evil friends, acting perversely, like a wild man at the end of the forest. When staying near the holy ones, one longs to escape, and wherever one goes, one is bound by sin. 154 If one is specifically urged to retreat, one will ruin the practice, like the tip of a kusha grass moving in the wind. With a bad character and hypocritical words, one approaches the guru like an elephant offering incense. 155 After obtaining the benefits of the excellent Dharma, one throws away the vows with great enthusiasm towards the hunter. All those who are dull-witted and unable to understand, after obtaining the essence of the instructions, abandon them again. 156 In the end, one becomes exhausted from searching for various texts. The new is not seen, and all the old is lost. For the faith that applies the true Dharma to practice, and for the desire to practice superficially for this life, 157 For the neutral person who does not approve of either, it is crucial to examine the characteristics of these three types of people. Wearing armor and having extremely firm wisdom, one serves diligently without regard for body and life. 158 For the person who regards all teachings as supreme and does not cherish oneself, liberation comes solely through devotion. Having faith, wisdom, learning, and great compassion, respecting vows and commitments, and taming the three doors of body, speech, and mind. 159 Being broad-minded, generous, having pure appearances and a sense of shame, and protecting the guru extremely well, one is wise. Not being angry at the guru's teachings and rebukes, like a fine horse, coming and going like a boat, and abandoning attachment to dwelling. 160
