In order to accumulate merit and eliminate obstacles, there are certain things that are indispensable before empowerment. As stated in the "Glorious Discipline": "If one does not perform the recitation beforehand, the master himself will be harmed." This means that if one fails to complete the recitation that pleases the deities, there will be great faults. The benefits of completing the recitation are as stated in the "Four Seats Sutra": "If one has performed the recitation beforehand, then whatever action one undertakes thereafter, it will surely be accomplished without doubt." Secondly, the four branches of the ground ritual are: Because mandalas are often built in old houses, the practice of examining the ground is prevalent. However, here, the five steps of examining, taking, purifying, holding, and protecting the ground are discussed together. First, examining the places suitable or unsuitable for building a mandala in terms of direction and characteristics. The "Vajra Dakini Tantra" states: "Villages, cemeteries, marketplaces, gardens, temples, and cities, the eastern and northern ground bases are auspicious, the southern and western directions are not." The sutra says that the six places and the eastern and northern bases outside of them are auspicious places. Since the classifications of each tantra are not entirely consistent, it is difficult to determine, but for yogis, there is no restriction on places that naturally bring happiness. Or, "Wherever the mind is pleased, there one may draw the mandala." Furthermore, the "General Tantra" states: "A gathering that is complete with all goodness is difficult to obtain. In short, a level ground, with a glossy sheen, measured eastward is considered good. A place with plenty of water, adorned with good trees, where my mind is pleased, free from harm and stinging, is an auspicious place for the mandala, which can accomplish all the siddhis of man." Among these, "stinging" refers to the five tastes of the earth, which will be explained below. In addition, one should avoid rubble, cliffs, pits, anthills, saline soil, ashes, dust, hair, insects, and a large number of creatures. However, there are ten places where one does not need to particularly emphasize examining and excavating for purification, as stated in the previous text: "The abode of sages, the place of the cow deity, caves and mountaintops, any covered ground, rooftops and flagstones, beside stupas and river islands, and on the shores of lakes, there is no need to purify the ground."

I don't need to examine, nor do I need to do it diligently. Even if it is completely compacted, there is no need to do that. There is no need to pull out thorns there. Defects such as high and low, there is no need to generate doubts there. Thus it is said. Furthermore, temples, gardens, cemeteries, etc., are also like that, as stated in Vajra Dakini. For places that are suitable like that, examining the soil, from the 'Vajrapani Manifest Empowerment Tantra': The wise person digs about one cubit, the soil that the mantra practitioner digs, fill it with that soil. If there is extra, it is the most excellent among the wise. If it is lacking, it is said to be medium. If it is not filled, then abandon it. Thus it is said. Examining with water, that hole again recites the rotating mantra, digging one fathom high, filling it with water, walking a hundred steps to the east, when looking with the hand, if the water does not decrease and rotates to the right, it is good. If it decreases and rotates to the left, with sound, there is fear of the nagas, therefore it should be abandoned, from Garland and Dakini. Examining from the perspective of color, from that same tantra: White indicates pacification, red is considered the meaning of power, yellow should be known as increase, black should be known as fierce action. Thus it is said. Second, taking the soil, that soil that is suitable after examination, in places such as the appearance of the victory banner, without being stingy, offering enjoyments and tormas to the earth goddess, offering white sweet food and tormas to the field owner, etc., dissolving with words, one should know the way to become autonomous like their respective rituals. Finally, the earth deity is absorbed into that very foundation, or lifted into the sky, and invited to reside. At that time, the way the owner gives, one should know from the omens of dependent arising and the signs of dreams, etc. Third, purification has four types: examining the abdomen, pulling out the thorns of the soil, purifying with substance, mantra, and samadhi, and purifying with the inconceivable truth of the dharma nature. The first is, from Dakini: Temples and mansions, stupas, mandalas, cities, houses and gardens, etc., digging into the abdomen of the abdomen. Therefore, for newly made mandala houses, it is definitely necessary. Similarly, after digging the soil, making the mandala platform also needs to be done. Whatever that foundation is, draw a line.
