The subsequent rituals involve patience and tolerance towards places where actions are manifestly performed, and after familiarity and acquaintance, showing loving-kindness. There are two considerations here: generally, for those who have entered the mantra path, and specifically, for those who have attained power. The first case is: towards those who revile the guru and the Three Jewels, and those with malicious thoughts and misconduct, one should befriend them with a consenting mind and actually show loving-kindness through body and speech. The *Commentary on the Source of Discipline* states: "Towards the malicious, loving-kindness from beginning to end." However, abandoning that sentient being with a mind that has abandoned loving-kindness contradicts the fourth root downfall. The second case is: for those who possess the mind of enlightenment and liberate beings through realization, there are ten fields for taming. The *Clear Illumination* states: "The Three Jewels, the teacher, the two enemies of the body, those who break vows, hold wrong views, and are hostile, those who transgress in gatherings and harm all, those who are enemies of vows with evil conduct, and the three lower realms—these ten are to be accepted by all yogis." Therefore, even if the two enemies of the body and the vows are violated, one should not waver and not abandon the actions of violation; returning from entering the mantra vehicle and thereby disparaging it; harboring hatred towards the guru and fellow practitioners; transgressing in mantra practices through theft or sexual misconduct as if not in control; harming all sentient beings; treating those with vows as enemies; and engaging only in non-virtuous actions, having an evil disposition, i.e., engaging in the cause of suffering—these are the nine situations. The first two, and the three situations of harming the Dharma, which are like the support and the supported of both, if the conduct is very violent, then even one who possesses the mind of generation with the Three Jewels as witness can punish them. The *Purification Tantra* states: "The fool who reviles the Three Jewels, harms the Buddha's teachings and the Sangha, and diligently reviles the guru, the wise should diligently kill." Also, the *Six-Faced Tantra* states: "The wise accomplished one, with a mind of benefiting sentient beings, should cut off their life." Therefore, if one allows the great wave of evil actions to continue, it will greatly harm the Dharma and sentient beings, and in that continuum, it will create the karma to remain in Avici hell for a long time. Therefore, this aim is to avert that.

If one punishes with a mind possessed by hatred, and if one does not do so but is patient and tolerant, one will violate the vows as stated earlier. One must avert harmful things, either with objects, or with mantras and other means, or with mandalas and samadhi, or with medicine, etc. If one does not do so, one will definitely violate the vows. Therefore, in the 'Vinaya Commentary' it says: 'However, if those who harm the Three Jewels do not stop even when prevented, then one should pray to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, generate great compassion, and act as instructed.' Furthermore, the seven other (defeats) and the three lower realms that experience the fruits of suffering are mentioned as objects of liberation in general. However, one should understand that this refers to the ability to transfer their respective consciousnesses to pure lands, and to possess the direct perception of knowing the beginning and the end, thereby enabling those who engage in the causes of bad migrations to prevent bad results and shorten them, and to certainly liberate those who experience the results from bad states. As stated earlier: 'Can the yogi transfer those actions from the body and be born in heaven or a pure Buddha-field? Only those who possess the complete establishment of consciousness can do so.' Therefore, for those who cannot do so, not performing manifest actions is not said to be a root downfall, as the 'Manjushri Root Tantra' says: 'Therefore, the practice of mantras is not to be done with manifest actions at all. The Buddhas and Bodhisattvas have strongly forbidden manifest actions. The Buddhas and Bodhisattvas who possess supreme compassion have great miraculous powers. In order to show the power of mantras, all actions are shown.' Because those who do not possess bodhicitta and its signs are naturally overwhelmed by anger, the situation of falling into hell through manifest actions is as stated in that very text: 'The Brahmin boy accomplished the wrathful one, called the slayer of Yama, and he also accomplished it in the womb. He is overwhelmed by anger, and he cuts off the lives of beings.' And, by the power of his mantra, that body serves the non-gods, and after the non-gods enter the body, now it is long
