Taking garments as proximate cause is the continuum of the basis or cause. Having an agent is the continuum of method or path. Therefore, the manner in which the three realms of samsara, nirvana, and the path are combined into the continuum of the basis, path, and result is as stated in the Hevajra Tantra: "This is called samsara; this is nirvana itself. Having abandoned samsara, elsewhere, one will not realize nirvana." Thus, at the time of co-emergent nature, clarity is samsara, emptiness is nirvana. During practice, mind is samsara, absence of self-nature is nirvana. At the time of the result continuum, spontaneous accomplishment is samsara, transformation of location is nirvana. All of these are combined with the method continuum of the path's instructions, thus becoming the method, and the three continuums of cause and result. Therefore, the nature of mind inherent in all sentient beings, the indestructible essence of the Sugata, possessing three distinctions, if realized, is nirvana, and if not realized, it becomes the cause of samsara. Whatever continuously and unchangingly exists in all of samsara and nirvana is called the continuum of the basis or cause. In terms of essence and non-bondage and liberation, it is the actual state of affairs. In terms of appearance, although possessing defilements, it has never been stained in its own essence, therefore it is the Sugata-garbha. In terms of the absence of characteristics, it is the Dharmakaya. In terms of the unceasing radiance of its nature, it abides as the support for the qualities of the Rupakaya. Whatever becomes various terms such as the mind of enlightenment, the inseparability of truth, and spontaneously arisen wisdom during the path, although without support and without obtaining self-nature, as the tantra says: "Spontaneously arisen wisdom appears without location." Thus, by relying on the continuum of the uninterrupted method of co-emergent conditions and instructions, having purified the adventitious defilements, the manifestation of various arrangements of body and wisdom in the completely pure realm is called the continuum of the indestructible result. Such a continuum of basis, path, and result must be established by relying on the three universally pervasive valid cognitions. That is, the words of the Victorious Ones, the valid cognition of the immaculate scriptures, the valid cognition of the instructions practiced by the wise and possessing the power of liberation, and the valid cognition of reasoning that is in accordance with both. As the Vajra Mirror says: "By scripture, reasoning, and instructions, whatever is measured by valid cognitions, knowable things will be comprehended." Thus, valid cognition.
