From the perspective of belonging to it, it is called the five sense consciousnesses. The functions of the Alaya-consciousness are: first, to serve as the basis for generating illusions; second, to connect with body and mind, experiencing pleasure and pain; third, to act as the cause for connecting the body with numerous aggregates; and fourth, to serve as the tool for accumulating karma and afflictions, as well as establishing the link of cause and effect. As it is said in the "Self-Arisen Wheel of Bliss": The five senses are the objects of manifestation, but if not examined by the mind, although it is Alaya-consciousness, it is not consciousness. Even if the various habitual tendencies of the mind-consciousness are divided, they cannot cause the habitual tendencies to increase; although it is consciousness, it is not Alaya-consciousness. Wherever the five forms manifest, they are completely integrated with non-duality, and the place where the eight consciousnesses gather and converge is called Alaya-consciousness. So it is said. In short, the reason why the term Alaya-consciousness is used is: because of the habitual tendencies that follow previous actions, because of the maturation that receives later actions, because of the order in which cause and effect mature sequentially, and because it is the common binder of pleasure and pain, it is called Alaya-consciousness. If one does not distinguish such differences, and mistakenly believes that "Alaya-consciousness is the basis of all things, and also the basis of Nirvana," and regards Alaya-consciousness as the Dharmakaya, then even if it is prohibited in the common appearance, what need is there to mention it in the supreme secret vehicle? The "Self-Manifestation" says: Some people think that Alaya-consciousness is the Dharmakaya. In order to answer this question, the definition of Alaya-consciousness is like this. Then he answered: Because everything is complete, it is Alaya-consciousness. Then he refuted with a question: Can the Buddha change? Because Alaya-consciousness manifests various things, because everything is completed from it, sentient beings can become Buddhas. Why is everything complete? Or it will become alternating. Why do various things manifest? Sometimes it will become a Buddha, sometimes it will become a sentient being. Why is there alternation? Then he asked back, saying: Then, is there no Alaya-consciousness? Then he answered: Alaya-consciousness clings to conceptual thoughts, and is deceived by various illusory knowledges. Alaya-consciousness is the entity of ignorance. So it is said. Therefore, these two must be well distinguished. The "Six Liberations" also says: Alaya-consciousness and

If the (Dharma) body is indivisible, it is like holding a single form as different cognitions, and cannot manifest their respective meanings. Thus it is said. So, the characteristics of the Dharmakaya are: its essence is the essence of emptiness-wisdom, its nature is the essence of clarity-light, and its compassion is the essence of unceasing awareness. Therefore, the root of mind, thought, and ignorance is severed, transcending the combined practice of the grounds and paths. As it is said in 'Self-Arisen': The immutable palace of the Dharmakaya dwells clearly in the center of each citta (Tibetan: ཙིཏྟ།). The essence of emptiness-wisdom! The essence of clarity-light! The essence of self-arisen awareness! The Dharmakaya possesses three essences, realizing the meaning of wisdom, there is no ground or path to traverse. This great Dharmakaya, beyond the limits of expression, exists in all, yet is not realized by all. Without mind, without thought, without the delusion of ignorance. Thus it is said. Furthermore, through the expressive door of words, it is named Dharmakaya, Bodhicitta, self-arisen wisdom, and the spontaneously accomplished Great Perfection of the Dharmadhatu. However, the one who names is none other than conceptual thought. Therefore, its own nature is inexpressible, beyond mind, free from elaboration, and appears as the sole reality. Thus, the state of the Dharmakaya is called the Great Perfection. Unlike the Yogacara-cittamatra school, it does not affirm self-knowing self-illumination. As for the analogy of measuring the limits of mind, it takes emptiness like space as the basis for calculation, which is different from the Madhyamaka school. Since there is no inner or outer, and no three times, it is not established as the mind of an ordinary being. Since there is no self or other, it is not established as one's own awareness, like the eternalist views of non-Buddhists. Although there has never been a grasper or grasped, it is not established as being separated from the two knowledges, like in cessation samadhi. Although it is not in the realm of perception and awareness, it does not abide as an opponent to higher seeing. Although there is no mind or mental factors, it is not established as an unspecified mind, like the fourfold possibilities of the twelve ayatanas. Since there is no clarity or non-clarity, it is not established as the self-illumination of the alaya-vijnana. Since it transcends awareness and non-awareness, awareness is merely posited as an appearance on the path, thereby purifying the obscurations of knowledge. The state of being without inherent existence is the nature of the great wisdom, as it is said in the 'Sutra of the Unmoving Nature of Reality': All phenomena are unborn by nature, unmoving in essence, free from the extremes of action, transcending the realm of elaboration, and primordially
