The way sentient beings are confused is: These ignorant sentient beings of the three realms, there is no confusion on the initial basis, but the appearance of the basis is ignorance, the sudden cause is the self-nature being one, that which sinks downwards, the co-emergent (ignorance), from name, meaning, self-grasping, and the fully imputed, from the three ignorances arise the four causes of confusion. The basis itself abiding like a house is the causal condition, the arising of discrimination upon it is the lord condition, from that, the object and the subject are the objective condition, the three simultaneously are the immediately preceding condition, from the assembly, the gradual confusion becomes powerful, the accumulation of afflictions increases, and the types of places of samsara are established. The twelve links of dependent origination are like a chariot wheel. Thus, although there is no confusion on the initial basis, the self-nature that appears as the basis is the ignorance of the cause of ignorance, which is of one self-nature. From that, a subtle discriminating wisdom arises, and that power becomes greater and greater, and just not knowing and reversing is called co-emergent ignorance. In that state, the object, light, is divided into two by the minds of self and other, and from the separated part it becomes name, meaning, and the part of grasping at self, which is the fully imputed ignorance. Thus, the cause of the cause, the three ignorances gather and assemble, just as the object, the eye, and eye consciousness gather, from the gathering of the eye, feeling arises from the condition of touch. The way the four conditions arise from that is, from the Vajrasattva Heart Mirror it says: All these sentient beings of the three realms are confused from a basis that is nothing at all. The nature of that basis is emptiness, self-nature is luminosity, and compassion can appear to sentient beings. Upon this, from the grasping consciousness, a little bit like a thread arises from the part of ignorance, and the thought arises, "Does wisdom arise from over there? Do I arise from over there?" Just having such a thought is confusion. Does ignorance exist on that basis, or does it exist on phenomena or appearance? From the appearance arise the four kinds of appearance conditions. That is also the basis existing in the form of a light sphere, called the causal condition, which is true ignorance. Upon this, it turns into discrimination, called the lord condition. Upon this, it is grasped as an object, called the objective condition, just as the face of a person appears in a mirror.

Like that. Because these three are the same, it is called the immediately preceding condition. It is originally one's own basis, but one does not recognize one's own face, and becomes deluded, thus forming the cycle of the three realms. From this, the afflictions become coarse, and the forms of sentient beings become different. It is from such a basis that delusion arises. So it is said. Thus, the four conditions cause one to be deluded about cause, effect, name, and various appearances. The Auspicious Beautiful Adornment says: This is also due to delusion by the four conditions, and ultimately it also comes down to the four conditions. Because of clinging to the cause as having an object, one is deluded about the cause of various effects. Because of clinging to the lord as having a place, one is deluded about various names. Because of clinging to the object as having intelligence, one is deluded about the endless effect. Because of clinging to the immediately preceding condition as having clinging, one is deluded about various appearances. This is the great principle of delusion of the basis of secret mantra. That is, in the way of appearing, due to the condition of ignorance, it appears together with its own self-nature. This ignorance also gathers many conceptualizations together with the five root afflictions. Together with thousands of conditions, together with many kinds of appearances, it is filled with appearances. That is, from the uninterrupted appearance of the state of the spontaneously accomplished precious box, the basis does not change but transforms into appearance, following various objects, and conceptualizing everything. Although the appearance of the Dharmakaya does not change, it appears as if there are changes in the appearance of delusion. Although Vajrasattva does not have delusion, he shows the way of delusion to sentient beings. Ultimately, it is to revert one's own appearance to one's own causal basis. Not knowing that the non-dual appearance is self-arisen, clinging to delusion as the lord, therefore it is the lord condition. Not knowing that the fruit of self-awareness is self-arisen, clinging to the cause as relative, therefore it is the causal condition. Not knowing that objects and consciousness are empty, clinging to the object as an object, therefore it is the condition of the object's own nature. Not knowing that self-arisen light arises dependent on time, the knowledge that clings to what is not it as it arises, and it is the same, therefore it is called the immediately preceding condition. If we briefly summarize these meanings, then the three causal conditions of ignorance are like the face of a person. For it, the lord condition that has turned into conceptual speculation is like a mirror. The object condition is like a mirror, a face, and one's own real object.
