It is also unreasonable to consider (them) as a collection. If the variety is considered as an external appearance, then the fault of the single basis appearing as many cannot be avoided. If it is considered as internal awareness, then just as awareness thinks of thoughts, the basis will also fall into the state of thinking of thoughts. If these two are considered as a collection, then that basis also includes the object taken externally and the mind that grasps internally. Because they are related to each other as the dependent and the depended upon, it is impossible to be a single dharmadhatu. As mentioned earlier, "The teacher previously said it was variegated, which is in accordance with direction and fire. The nature of the previous (statement) is appearance, and the meaning of different fruits is explained. Because of the sound of many, it is weakened. Is this not the knowable? What was said is also the same." Thus, the seven bases are like being bound by the knowable of clinging, clinging to the partiality of understanding each aspect of wisdom, like many blind people describing the shape of an elephant. The Essence Sutra says, "The king gathered many blind people and showed them an elephant, ordering them to describe the characteristics of the elephant individually." Then, those who touched the elephant's trunk said, "It's like a hook." Those who touched the eyes said, "It's like a bowl." Those who touched the ears said, "It's like a winnowing basket." Those who touched the back said, "It's like a bed." Those who touched the tail said, "It's like a rope." The blind people were not saying anything other than the elephant, but they did not fully understand it. Similarly, the nature of the Buddha is also, although emptiness, illusion, luminosity, etc., are said to be different, they are not fully understood." It's like that. Secondly, acknowledging that the primordially pure, spontaneously accomplished, and inseparable basis is without fault. Here, the essence is pure from the beginning, the qualities are spontaneously accomplished, neither one nor other. Because it is free from the elaboration of things and characteristics, it is primordially pure. Because it is profound, clear, and without obstruction, it is spontaneously accomplished. That is, because the essence is primordially pure, from the perspective of emptiness, things and characteristics are not established. And because the nature is spontaneously accomplished, from the perspective of appearance, because it is profound, clear, and without obstruction, it also avoids the extremes of permanence and annihilation. The Six Spaces says, "The essence is primordially pure, the nature is spontaneously accomplished." The Pearl Rosary also says, "The essence is primordially pure, free from expression, the nature is spontaneously accomplished and appearance is complete."

Yes. If, according to the tantras, the seven bases are definitively established, wouldn't this become eight? Answer: Although primordial purity and spontaneous presence are divided into two functions, since they are encompassed by a single collection, there is no contradiction in number. In times when these two are of different substances, if it is primordial purity, there is no knowing of confusion; if it is spontaneous presence, there is no knowing of change. Therefore, it cannot serve as the basis for the arising of samsara and nirvana, because the opposites are unmixed and the essence has the ability to abandon singularity. If someone thinks these two are different, and says: If you have proven that the individual states of primordial purity and spontaneous presence are flawed, then isn't there also a flaw here where one basis has contradictory substances? Answer: From the perspective of emptiness, the ultimate truth is primordial purity, and from the perspective of appearance, the conventional truth is spontaneous presence. These are just terms used, but there is no difference in substance. Just as a Brahmin is a person, but is also referred to from the perspective of caste. Therefore, it is not that one basis is contradictory in substance. Like being inclined to sleep and knowing the time of sleep. The essence is primordial purity, so it has not experienced samsara. The power of spontaneous presence manifests as anything. Thus, from the aspect of the essence being primordially pure, it is impossible to be confused as sentient beings. But from the power or manifestation of the spontaneously present nature, it appears that way and there is no contradiction. For example, from being inclined to sleep to the state of sleep, there are no dreams in the consciousness where the eighty types of nature's thoughts have ceased, but dreams appear in the appearance where the radiance of offerings is carried by the wind. So, is the so-called basis of confusion considered to be the Tathagatagarbha or ignorance with its causes? If it is the former, then the Buddha's intention would become confused. If it is the latter, then the essence of confusion cannot be found. Answer: The essence of primordial purity is the Tathagatagarbha, so it has never been confused, it is not confused, and it will not become confused. But the power of the spontaneously present nature, with the alaya consciousness and the eight aggregates, has the reason that if one does not recognize one's own nature, one will be confused, and if one recognizes it, one will be liberated. As it says in the Sixth Space: "The essence is primordially pure, It is unreasonable for sentient beings to wander in samsara, Because awareness is inherently free from defilements, The Teacher spoke of the great-hearted one. Because the nature is spontaneously present, It also appears unceasingly as play, The courageous one also prays, Spontaneously accomplished within the nature."
