Moreover, actions related to the body become root downfalls as soon as they are done. Actions related to speech become root downfalls when any other person understands them. Actions arising solely from the mind become root downfalls if they are not remedied by antidotes within each session. In general, since there is no thought that does not assist body and speech, if one does not examine in each of the six parts into which a day is divided whether one has been tainted by the category of the fourteen root downfalls called "defeat" and faults such as coarse ones, then it is the nature of sentient beings that one cannot escape from discriminating consciousness, so there is a danger of downfalls increasing without end. Having examined in this way, if one finds that one has been tainted by faults and downfalls along with their parts, one should generate strong regret and the intention to rectify. If one finds that one has not been tainted, one should cultivate joy, thinking that one's path has not been interrupted, and dedicate the stream of virtue to sentient beings. Whether one has been tainted before or not, one should generate the thought that even if one's life is at stake, one will not associate with faults and downfalls. If one expresses the intention to think and discern in this way within any one of the six parts, then a coarse downfall called exceeding the performance of confession through mindfulness and awareness will arise. As it is said: Three times during the day and night, one should recite each day. When the yogi has degenerated, he becomes a coarse downfall. That is to say, if the meaning of performing confession is known, and all six parts occur, it will increase to six coarse downfalls. If it increases in this way, and rectification is not completed on that very day, then when the first light of dawn appears on the following day, it will become twelve coarse downfalls, so be careful. In general, on all paths of sutra and tantra, due to the decline of mindfulness and awareness, all the qualities that rely on the two truths will decline. As it is said in the Letter to a Friend: When mindfulness declines, all dharmas will be destroyed. Having become capable through such motivation, then in determining the categories of downfalls and vows of Vajrayana, general and specific, in general, among the two types of downfalls, root downfalls and coarse downfalls. First, initially, the bond of cherishing the supreme general. Observe the classification of the fourteen root downfalls as follows. First, the empowerment-obtained master, what need is there to mention the mantra

Even explaining a single verse, to the three teachers who show the profound instructions of the path, despising the reverence of the Dharma connection as a burden, there is no attainment of mantra. In this way, the fourteen root downfalls are explicitly stated in the Vajra Heart Ornament Tantra, the Kalachakra, the Red Yamari, and the Black Enemy Tantras, etc. Because it is a collection of the meanings of all the tantras, it is a supreme and universally cherished great vow, so even in the Fifty Verses on the Guru it says: "The fourteen root downfalls should be recited and upheld." Why are they called root downfalls? Just as if the root of a tree is pulled out, the trunk, branches, and even the fruit disappear, so if the root of generating all qualities is pulled out, it obstructs the generation of higher qualities and falls to a lower state, therefore it is called a downfall. Among them, the first root downfall: The object of generation is: one who possesses all three of empowerment, tantra explanation, and instruction, is called possessing three kindnesses, as the tantra says: "The tantra is explained, empowerment is given, and it is indicated." And in the Jewel Lamp it says: "The teacher who gives empowerment and explains the tantra, and from whom one receives the instructions for practice, that is also the teacher, and these three should be without jealousy and wish to benefit, that is the teacher." Therefore, these three kindnesses are also with the mind of benefiting the disciple, for one who possesses the bodhicitta of emptiness, because one's own wishes are fulfilled, one becomes stingy, and a mind of indifference arises, thus abandoning respect and service, despising the guru as a burden. In the Ornament of Kosala it says: "Reviling the teacher from the heart, even if one practices, it will not be accomplished." Therefore, what need is there to say if one despises such an object of generating the root downfall? In short, the fault of despising as a burden the gratitude towards the teacher who correctly explains the meaning of the mantra tantra in verse form, or who correctly transmits the essential points of the instructions with a subtle mind of benefit from the perspective of wisdom arising from meditation, is also difficult to tolerate. As mentioned earlier: "Just by hearing a single verse, one who does not regard the teacher as the guru will be born in the abode of dogs a hundred times, and will be born as a leper."
