For the Pratimoksha vows, there are also no two situations of breaking or not breaking the vows. When the Teacher (Shakyamuni Buddha) was alive, there was a Bhikshu named Jyema who went mad and became naked, etc. For the situation of not violating the four root vows, because it was impossible to do so, it was allowed to be indulgent. It is the same here. Considering non-virtue as the ultimate form, it is not the sect of our Teacher. Therefore, in order to be able to identify the boundaries of the sins to be spoken of, the difference between habitual practice and gross sins is explained below: Root sins other than Bodhicitta are called habitual practice, that is, still wanting to do that thing, not stopping the thought of wanting to do it, and not regretting it, feeling no shame in oneself, and feeling no embarrassment when looking at others. The motivation that possesses these three dharmas, until the completion of this matter, if it continues uninterrupted, it becomes a complete sin of habitual practice. If the time is interrupted and not continuous, or if any one of the three dharmas is missing, or if the branches of the action are incomplete, it becomes a gross sin. In general, habitual practice refers to the branches of the root sins of Bodhisattvas, as has been determined in the Bodhisattva Pitaka. Here is the method of applying habitual practice as a branch of mantra sins. The fifth root sin, abandoning Bodhicitta, does not depend on habitual practice, and for the other thirteen, whichever one is committed, and still does not stop the thought of wanting to do it, and does not regret that action as a fault, feeling no shame in oneself, and feeling no embarrassment when looking at others, these three dharmas, or on the basis of these three dharmas, adding joy and satisfaction with those sins, becoming four dharmas, this is only a subtle difference. In any case, as long as such a bad motivation arises, from the second moment until the actual action is completed, it is called a great habitual practice or a defeat. Because it cuts off the vows, it defeats the opposing side. That is to say, from the inharmonious enemy side, the harmonious friend on this side is defeated. As it is said in the 'Peak Tantra': The fourteen other than that are called defeats, and should not be abandoned or discarded, they are called root sins. If from the beginning of the motivation to generate the root sin, until the actual action is not completed, thinking that there is such a fault in doing so

Engaging in sexual misconduct, giving rise to feelings of shame and embarrassment, even if a slight thought of desire arises, it will become gross. Since all the factors are not complete, the root downfall will not fully occur. Therefore, if the mind is capable, there is nothing that cannot be practiced. Like this, the root downfalls of the Vajrayana seem numerous and easy to occur, so thinking that they are difficult to protect, one suppresses them with the depths of the mind, and through determining the precepts, one avoids forgetting and abandoning without comment, and cherishes confession and vows. Furthermore, if we divide according to the four categories of constituent elements, among the four, if there is a view that considers it a fault, then all three remaining are complete; those with two or one complete are minor offenses; if there is no view that considers it a fault, then even if all three remaining are not complete, it is a medium offense; the great offense can be understood from the implications. Therefore, just as one gathers buckets of water before dawn, before the root and branch downfalls occur, one must determine the boundary of the motivation that generates the root downfall and adopt the method of antidote. Through it, understand all the root and branch downfalls, do not arouse them with the mind, do not do them with the body. Divide the day and night into six periods, and in each period, count whether the faults of the fourteen root downfalls have occurred or not. If one is stained, increase the feeling of regret and strive to correct it; if one is not stained, cultivate joy and dedicate it. Whether one has been stained in the past or not, in the future, even if one's life is at stake, do not be stained by wrongdoing, and adhere very strongly to the vow. Whenever, in any of the six periods, if the awareness of counting becomes dull, it will become what is called "gross." If all six periods have passed, it will become six "gross." If correction is not completed within that day, then when the first light of dawn appears the next day, it is said that it will become twelve "gross." The branch vows also apply in the same way. Therefore, regarding the nature of the vows and precepts of the root and branches, whatever is going to be proclaimed, do not abandon it with the mind, do not violate it with the body. If one does not do so, not knowing is the door to downfall, so first one must clearly understand the boundaries of downfall, and like an enemy planting spies, in all circumstances, one must observe with a mind of mindfulness.
