In short, Vipassana (insight) is not swayed by the obscurations of ignorance and all the nets of evil views of opponents, such as viewing the world as real, and it can suppress evil doctrines and unprophesied minds. As stated in the Sutra of Moon Lamp, "With the power of Samatha (tranquility), it will not be shaken; with the power of Vipassana, it will be like a mountain." This is how it is taught. Furthermore, the Hearers (Śrāvakas) have more concentration and less wisdom, while Bodhisattvas are the opposite. The Tathāgatas have both equally, and thus can see with the wisdom of omniscience. As stated in the Great Nirvana Sutra, "The Hearers do not see the nature of the Tathāgata because they have more concentration and less wisdom. Bodhisattvas see it, but not clearly, because they have more wisdom and less concentration. The Tathāgatas see everything because they equally possess both Samatha and Vipassana." This is how it is taught. Therefore, in the state of perfect equanimity, all dharmas are naturally luminous like the expanse of the sky, and the part that can open understanding is the unmistaken Vipassana. It is very important not to mistake the various objects of the mind's distractions and evil discriminations for discriminating wisdom. As stated in the Sutra Requested by Kashyapa, "What is discrimination? Kashyapa, what is discriminated as selfless?" From here, "Without power is discrimination, it is the correct discrimination of the Dharma of the Middle Way. Kashyapa, furthermore, one does not discriminate form as permanent, nor does one discriminate it as impermanent, this is called discrimination of the Dharma of the Middle Way. Kashyapa, what is called permanent is one extreme, what is called impermanent is the second extreme. What is in the middle of the two extremes is inconceivable, unshowable, non-reliant, non-appearing, non-consciousness, non-existent. Kashyapa, this is the discrimination of the Dharma of the Middle Way." This is clear. Therefore, before accomplishing the union of Samatha and Vipassana, great compassion for all sentient beings

To focus the mind on an object with a focused view is a special method of a Bodhisattva. During the main practice, a completely peaceful mind does not abide by either extreme and enters into a state of equanimity where the elaborations of subject and object are pacified. This is the manifestation of its perfectly pure wisdom. As taught by the noble Inexhaustible Intellect: What is the method of a Bodhisattva? What is the manifestation of wisdom? For what purpose does one meditate? By observing sentient beings, focusing on the object of great compassion is their method. For what purpose does one enter into peace and complete peace? That is their wisdom. If focusing on the object of great compassion itself transforms into meditation, then all the stages of cultivating relative Bodhicitta will transform into ultimate Bodhicitta, thus losing the Dharma that connects to the Mahayana path. Without it, during the main practice, the classification of virtue, which is encompassed by the three superiorities such as no object, will also be destroyed. Therefore, in the state of perfect meditation, all reliance on skillful means does not arise because they all have objects. However, during its preparatory practices and subsequent attainment, all reliance on skillful means arises. As stated in the Secret Sutra of the Tathagata: Son of lineage, just as fire burns from fuel, and ceases when there is no fuel, similarly, the mind burns with an object, and the mind becomes peaceful when there is no object. Therefore, a Bodhisattva who is skilled in means, with the perfection of completely pure Prajnaparamita, also knows the pacification of objects, but does not pacify the object of the root of virtue, nor does he cause the object of afflictions to arise, and also abides in the object of the Paramitas. In emptiness, he also individually examines the object, and also observes all sentient beings with great compassion. Son of lineage, in this way, a Bodhisattva who is skilled in means, with the pure Prajnaparamita, obtains mastery over objects. And, now whatever the object of a Bodhisattva may be, now everything is for the manifestation of omniscient wisdom.
