Sounds are pleasing, scents are fragrant, tastes are delicious, touch is smooth, and one is fond of and attached to contemplation and analysis. Thus and so forth is widely proclaimed, and also in the Mindfulness Sutra it says: Noble son, these ten things obstruct the meditation and recitation of Bodhisattvas. What are the ten? They are: listening to noisy talk, drawing pictures, composing poetry, gatherings of stars, contemplating constellations, claiming acquired food as one's own, thinking of transforming wealth like a flesh-eating woman, relying on kings, not consulting the wise, delighting in enjoying comfort, and dwelling in haunted places; these are the ten. Therefore, abandoning these, and abiding solely in a state where the mind stream is not distracted, one should accomplish common meditation. The function is to obtain extreme pliancy of body and mind, thereby making this life happy and serving as a basis for the accomplishment of miraculous powers. The result is the attainment of supernormal cognition, liberation, exhaustion, subjugation, and other qualities common to the Hearers. As the Ornament of the Sutras says: Causing happiness and, mastering the realm of supernormal cognition, primarily through the dharmas, they possess those three. Having fully understood such meditation, the wise should cultivate it correctly. Thus, merely relying on meditation arising in the continuum has immeasurable benefits. One turns away from the qualities of desire, afflictions naturally subside, one delights solely in solitude, experiences many doors of samadhi, and supernormal cognition arises, thereby accomplishing the benefit of others. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, for example, a bird without wings cannot fly in the sky. Likewise, Bodhisattva Mahasattvas, if they do not rely on supernormal cognitions, cannot teach the Dharma. Thus it was proclaimed. Among them, the six supernormal cognitions are stated in the Treasury of Knowledge: Miraculous power, divine ear, and mind, former lives, death, and birth, knowledge of exhaustion should precede. Therefore, knowing the realm of miraculous power, knowing the divine ear, knowing the minds of others, the wisdom of remembering former lives, knowing death and birth, knowing the exhaustion of defilements before

This is how it should be practiced. The explanation of worldly meditation is as follows: The preliminary stage of the first dhyana has both investigation and analysis. The actual practice has no investigation, only analysis. In the remaining three dhyanas, both investigation and analysis are absent. The former acts as the preliminary stage for the latter. It is known as the basis of the noble path. Among them, there are two types of practice: practicing with form and practicing without form. Practicing with form refers to the four dhyanas of learners and ordinary beings, their preliminary stages, and entering into samadhi through them. With a wishful mind, not possessing the limbs of enlightenment, it is the cause for accomplishing the peak of existence, possessing equanimity, and having both investigation and analysis. This is the preliminary stage of the first dhyana, which is the mind of application. Furthermore, having transcended desire and sinful dharmas, possessing investigation, analysis, joy, and happiness, at that time it is called the first dhyana. From that, without investigation but only with analysis, it is called the distinguished mind of the first dhyana. When one is free from investigation and analysis, having abandoned the desire of the first dhyana realm, possessing joy, happiness, and complete inner clarity, at that time it is called the second dhyana. Having abandoned the desire of the second dhyana, possessing happiness, equanimity, mindfulness, and awareness, at that time it is called the third dhyana. When one is free from the desire of the third dhyana realm, neither suffering nor happiness, possessing equanimity and mindfulness, at that time it is called the fourth dhyana. The preliminary stages of the latter three dhyanas, as explained in the Bhumi division, are done by their respective preceding ones. Similarly, the four formless absorptions and the cessation absorption, these nine are merely the basis of the noble path. To attain these samadhis, there are six obstacles: laziness, forgetting the object of focus, sinking, excitement, non-application, and application. To counteract these, cultivate the eight striving activities of abandonment, which are: faith, aspiration, diligence, and pliancy. These four are the antidotes to laziness, enabling
