If you give up about seven portions, this will be an immeasurable accumulation of merit compared to that. Completely abandon concern for body and life, and meditate on emptiness and peace as the most supreme. With a diligent and extremely diligent mind, dwell in solitude like a high mountain. As Manjushri said in teaching the qualities of the Buddha-field: Shariputra, taking dwelling in solitude to heart, one fully obtains ten benefits. What are the ten? They are: completely abandoning busyness, relying on extreme solitude, becoming focused on meditation, not having many affairs, pleasing the Buddhas, one's body being comfortable and inseparable from it, one's pure conduct not being interrupted, obtaining samadhi with little effort, the teaching of words and letters not being diminished, and fully understanding the meaning of the Dharma as it is heard. Shariputra, a Bodhisattva who dwells in solitude fully obtains these ten benefits. In accordance with what is said in the "Moon Lamp Sutra" and the "Sutra Requested by Gangpo," it is also extensively taught there. Next, the actual explanation of meditating on samadhi is: Wherever meditation is extremely stable, that is the characteristic of higher training in mind. The physical posture that relies on dependent arising is the life force of the mind, possessing the seven aspects of Vairochana. Strive for samadhi that is not dualistic from one. With the grasping and analysis of any object of focus, bind the mind to the meaning of virtue. The appearance of elaboration dissolves into the single nature of reality. The object of appearance is uninterrupted, and there, without grasping, the knowing that does not conceptualize objects is samadhi. The subsequent attainment of higher insight is the nature of oneness. Therefore, the nature of samadhi is that the mind is fixed on whatever virtuous object of focus there is, as it says in the "Cloud of Jewels Sutra": "The nature of samadhi is the mind abiding in one-pointedness." Here, the cause of its arising is the three types of discipline, and the three trainings that realize it. For now, firstly, taking the common vehicle as the basis, from becoming accustomed to higher discipline arises higher samadhi, and from becoming accustomed to that arises higher wisdom, and in that way, the manner of cutting off the root of the aggregates of afflictions and obtaining liberation. In the Vinaya, in the "Basis of Medicine": Monks...

By practicing discipline, concentration will abide for a long time. By practicing concentration, wisdom will abide for a long time. By practicing wisdom, it will be like this: from desire, hatred, and ignorance, the mind will be completely liberated. Thus, the Vinaya Pitaka, by teaching the discipline of abstaining from misconduct to oneself, makes the field of conduct complete. The Sutra Pitaka, by distinguishing the three trainings of both the Great and Small Vehicles, and by extensively speaking of having the four immeasurables such as loving-kindness filling the world, correctly applies to the training of higher mind. The Abhidharma Pitaka, by showing the meaning to be expressed without error, correctly applies the training of higher wisdom to the four noble truths. Therefore, this place of meditation is the nature of the training of higher mind. To enter into it, first generate great compassion, desiring to manifestly lead all beings away from suffering. As it says in the Ornament, "Vast and extensive, pure, benefiting greatly, surpassing by virtue alone, pure intention is superior intention." Thus, manifest the superior intention of wanting to establish all sentient beings in the essence of enlightenment. Afterwards, prostrate to all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the ten directions, and make offerings and confessions to the best of your ability, and perform the seven-limbed practice. Then, on a very comfortable seat, either sit in the full lotus posture of Vairochana or the half lotus posture. Do not open the eyes too much, nor close them too much, but fix them on the tip of the nose. The body should not fall to either side of leaning forward or backward, but should be straightened upright. Keep the shoulders level, without being high or low. Align the nose and navel in a straight line. Place the tongue against the root of the teeth. The breath should not be sent out and in with sound, roughness, or agitation, but should occur and cease in a slow and natural manner. Keep mindfulness inwardly, and sit in this way. Having sat in this way, first focus the mind single-pointedly on the blessed image of the Tathagata that you have seen before, and on the qualities and marks that you have heard of the Buddha appearing in the world, and practice calm abiding. The noble
