From the Samadhiraja Sutra: 'With a body like the color of gold, The protector of the world, beautiful in every way. Whoever places their mind on that object, That Bodhisattva is said to be in Samadhi.' Furthermore, the basis of practice is the mind, and its nature is as stated in the Ratnakuta Sutra, where the Buddha said that the mind cannot be found no matter how much it is sought. Whatever is not found is invisible. Whatever is invisible is neither past, nor future, nor present. Therefore, any object, whether material or immaterial, can be used as an object of focus. When all distractions towards external objects are pacified, the appearance of elaboration dissolves into the nature of the single taste of Dharmata. Although dissolving is comfortable, it is not falling into the foolish state of cessation of appearances, but is naturally peaceful. Because it lacks substance, it is subtle; because its essence is not established, it is difficult to observe. The object of appearance has not ceased, yet the thought of clinging to it is destroyed, which is a Samadhi endowed with the complete abandonment of faults. As previously stated: 'Samadhi is a place of tranquility, Peaceful, subtle, and difficult to see. Because all thoughts are destroyed, Therefore, it is called Samadhi.' In such a state, bound by the rope of mindfulness, the object of focus is continuous and not stolen away by factors such as sinking or excitement, this is Shamatha. Fully understanding its nature is the certainty of Vipassana. As stated in the Holy Cloud Jewel Sutra: 'Shamatha is single-pointedness of mind, Vipassana is perfect discernment.' Therefore, when the mind abides without conceptualizing objects, whatever arises from the extreme pliancy of body and mind is Samadhi, which is the nature of Shamatha, but it must be connected with Vipassana. Shamatha can only temporarily suppress afflictions and cannot eliminate obscurations. Only the discriminating wisdom that is of the same essence, the same function, and at the same time eliminates obscurations, can thoroughly destroy habitual tendencies and truly see all phenomena as illusory, thus it is Vipassana endowed with subsequent attainment. As it says in the Holy Sandhinirmocana Sutra: 'Dhyana subdues the afflictions, Wisdom destroys the habitual tendencies.' And, non-conceptual

As it is printed, it says: With the wisdom that transcends the world, all phenomena are seen as equal, like the center of the sky. What is attained after that is seen as illusory, like a mirage and the moon in water. Thus it is said. If divided, there are the Child's Practice, the Meaningful Distinction, and the Tathagata's Virtue, the three concentrations. There are also the four concentrations with and without investigation, and the four formless concentrations, making a variety of types. The samadhi in the continuum of one who has not entered the path is the practice of concentration and the formless realms. The samadhi of one who has entered the path, the accumulation and application paths, is known as the Meaningful Distinction, which manifests the path of liberation. The samadhi of the noble ones from the first ground onwards is the Tathagata's Virtue, because it is without outflows. As it is said in the Lankavatara Sutra: the Child's Practice concentration, the Meaningful Distinction concentration, and the Tathagata's Virtue concentration. Among these, the Child's Practice concentration is the samadhi in the continuum of one who has not entered the path, and the concentrations of the form and formless realms are worldly paths. Among the two transcendental paths, the Meaningful Distinction concentration is that which, having entered the path, manifests the path of liberation through the samadhi of the accumulation and application paths. The Tathagata's Virtue concentration is the samadhi without outflows in the continuum of the noble ones from the first ground onwards. In general, its essence is the mind holding inward. The cause is continuous mindfulness and diligence. If distracted, one should return to it again. Its function is to generate happiness and accomplish miraculous powers. Its result is the attainment of direct perception and so forth. Among these, the essence of concentration is the mind abiding single-pointedly within. The cause for accomplishing this concentration is that it must be accomplished by relying on continuous mindfulness and the condition of diligence. As it is taught in the Ornament of the Sutras: The mind abides within, relying on mindfulness and diligence. At that time, if the attention is weak and the mind is distracted, one should stabilize calm abiding with the nine ways of settling the mind taught in the Perfection of Wisdom, namely: fixing the mind, continuing to fix it, restoring it, closely fixing it, taming it, pacifying it, completely pacifying it, making it one-pointed, and evenly fixing it. Thus it is said. Those

The first is to focus the mind on the object. The second is to continuously focus on that same object. The third is to recognize distraction and abandon it. The fourth is to abandon distraction and, through repeated effort, focus on that same object. The fifth is to generate joy. The sixth is to see the faults of distraction and completely pacify that joy. The seventh is to eliminate dullness and sleep, etc. The eighth is to enter without mental fabrication. The ninth is to maintain equanimity when the mind becomes balanced. Thus, the Protector Maitreya taught these terms. At that time, one should strive to counteract the opposing factors to samadhi. In the *Ten Wheels of Ksitigarbha Sutra*, it says: Thereafter, the Bhagavan told Great Brahma: There are ten kinds of dharmas that should not be dwelt in or practiced. If a practitioner follows even one of these evil practices, even the roots of virtue in the desire realm will not be fully accomplished. Even if they are accomplished, they will quickly be lost and degenerate, let alone the samadhis of the form and formless realms, and the realization of the three vehicles and the one vehicle. What are these ten? For example, some people in the world want to practice samadhi, but are troubled by the necessities of life and afflicted by the means of livelihood. Some people want to practice samadhi (this can be applied to all the following), but their discipline is broken, and they do many improper things. They view things perversely, cling to worldly omens of good and bad, and defile their body and mind. Their minds are restless and agitated, they do not incline towards the noble ones, and they indulge their senses. They delight in gossiping and creating discord. They are harsh in speech, revile the noble ones, and are domineering. They speak empty words and lie. Out of greed and jealousy, they rejoice in the gains, respect, and acquisitions of others. With hatred, they generate harmful thoughts towards sentient beings. With wrong views, they believe that there is no cause and effect. And so on. For example, liking and clinging to things that are to be worked on. Liking and clinging to idle talk. Being deluded by sleep. Seeking material gain. Beautiful appearances.
