Stubborn. Praising oneself and spreading unpleasant things about others. Relying on the rough demeanor of the tongue that is the emanation of afflictions. Always thinking of any fluctuating wealth as permanent. Ungrateful, distorting the image of contentment. The sparks of hatred are stirred by the wind of slander. Like a monkey, giving various harms. Like a crocodile, widening the belly of sin. Like a venomous snake, destroying whoever is encountered. Like fire, burning the trees of virtue. One should keep far away from the companionship of children. Therefore, the nature of ordinary children is full of afflictions, so they consider their own faults as virtues. They are also skilled at proclaiming the virtues of others as bad. Unable to control afflictions, they cause the increase of wildness and sinful deeds. The nature of samsara is fluctuating and painful, but they see it as permanent and happy, so they are always diligent in abandoning virtue and peace. As it is said in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: "Associating with children, one becomes like a child, praising oneself and disparaging others, and talking about the pleasures of samsara, etc., non-virtue will certainly arise." And so on. These characteristics are ungrateful, repaying kindness with harm, having various desires, and never being satisfied. It is difficult to control them whether they are enemies or friends. As it is said in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: "In one moment they become friends, and in another moment they become enemies. They get angry at difficult situations, so it is difficult to please ordinary people." And so on. Similarly, they like hatred and discord, so they do not maintain mindfulness, and they do not associate with harmonious groups, so a great wind of slander arises. Like monkeys, all their actions become the cause of harm. If many gather, there will be fighting, competition, and quarrels, and even if only two gather, they will rely on idle talk and jokes. The Bhagavan said in the Sutra: "Many will quarrel, two will chat, like the bracelets of a young woman, one should remain in peace alone." Here, the bracelets of a young woman are, for example, when a young woman is grinding sandalwood, she feels uncomfortable because she is wearing many bracelets on her arm, so she gradually takes them off, leaving only two bracelets, but they still collide with each other, making her uncomfortable. When only one is left

Just as one obtains happiness, even in a monastery, one will quarrel with friends, and both will become places of affliction. Therefore, living alone is worthy of praise. So said the teacher Danaśīla. Especially now, in the degenerate age of the five hundred, sentient beings are afflicted by the demons of the five degenerations, and without reason, they harm others through the three doors of body, speech, and mind. They slander the Dharma and the noble ones, delight in dividing into factions and parties, and protect their own sect, but they are not even harmonious with their own sect. They report this situation to the king: How one bestows benefit, so one brings harm; when one has, one is sad, and when one does not have, one suffers; when one associates, one easily sees faults and quarrels. These are the characteristics of sentient beings! Furthermore, they are jealous of those who do not have equal fortune, and they harbor harmful thoughts towards those who are equal. They despise those who are inferior, and if they see a little wealth, praise, and respect, they become arrogant. If they hear even a little about their own faults, they become angry. They delight in the means of killing, robbing, and hunting, so their bellies of sin are larger than those of makaras. The meaning is little, the activities are many, the mind is distracted, and they delight in bustle. They are filled only with sin and non-virtue, and like poisonous snakes, they harm whoever they meet. Associating with them, being friends with them, and serving them as attendants will also burn the trees of virtue like fire, and one will naturally decline from the Dharma. Śāntideva said: If one speaks what is beneficial to them, they become angry, and I also turn from benefit to harm. Not listening to those words, they become angry and fall into the lower realms. They are jealous of those who are higher, compete with those who are equal, are arrogant towards those who are lower, and become proud when praised. They become angry when unpleasant things are said. When will one obtain benefit from children? Therefore, in relation to the noble ones, all afflicted beings are said to be of the nature of children. Therefore, the nature of ordinary beings is difficult to please, and I cannot fulfill their desires. Relying on them, I cannot achieve liberation and omniscience. Therefore, until I have accomplished my own benefit, I will not abandon sentient beings with compassion. From the perspective of what is appropriate, I should abandon association with all childish friends, go to the forest and solitary places, and practice meditation. In this way, I have not accomplished my own benefit, nor will I become their benefit.
