Those with wisdom do not feel happy. (Because) sins are eliminated, and merit is for the sake of meaning. (Therefore) one should always strive for this. Thus it is said. In order to distinguish the nature of diligence, there is the armor-like diligence that destroys the four maras, the diligence of combining the paths of the ten bhumis, and the diligence of not fearing, not retreating, and not being content. The diligent one accomplishes all wishes. As it is said in the Compendium of Topics: Armor and, combination and, not fearing and, not retreating and, not being content, the mind rejoices. Among these, armor-like diligence is: When a Bodhisattva is diligent in any combination, before being diligent, one must not be satisfied with just the rough actions of body and speech, but must accept any armor of courage that cannot be penetrated. Even if I have to remain in the great hell of sentient beings for countless incalculable great kalpas in order to eliminate the suffering of one sentient being, until perfect enlightenment, I will not abandon diligence. How much more so should I not easily abandon the armor for other minor sufferings and short periods of time. One should demonstrate courage in this way. In the Adhimukti Sutra it says: Distributing armor is steadfast, Bodhisattvas, for each action of each sentient being, also revolve in samsara as long as the end of samsara exists, seeking the medicine of wisdom, not abandoning armor, and distributing it very steadfastly from great armor to armor without separation. Thus it is said. Getting used to this kind of thinking and generating faith can also become a cause for awakening the power of the Mahayana lineage. In the Compendium of Perfections it says: In samsara, abandoning one's own suffering, generating immeasurable steadfast armor, for those who are brave in conduct and have compassion, this is said to be the first correct acceptance. Thus it is said. The extent to which such armor-like diligence does not regress is that from beginningless samsara until today, if every day and night is counted as one year and one month, then after one hundred million kotis of years, one Bodhicitta being and one Buddha will appear.

Furthermore, like the number of sands in the Ganges River, one (person) knows the realm and behavior of one sentient being. In that way, it is only necessary to understand the minds and behaviors of infinite sentient beings. However, in order not to be discouraged, and to strengthen the armor, it is taught from the questions of inexhaustible wisdom. Abiding in such diligence, having activities such as remembering the Buddha, the way in which even demons cannot find an opportunity is what was asked by the maiden Good Intelligence. Regarding all phenomena, wanting to realize the Dharma, abiding in diligence, remembering the Buddha, completely dedicating, confessing, and prostrating, in that way, demons will not find an opportunity. Having thus strengthened the armor of diligence, among the two things that are undertaken for what purpose, the diligence of application is: all places for accumulating virtuous dharmas, that is, like this, relying on the six or ten perfections to completely perfect and purify the ten bhumis, as it is said in the questions of Adhimukti. In order to fully know all wisdom and completely gather sentient beings, one cultivates the perfection of generosity, the perfection of ethics, the perfection of patience, the perfection of diligence, and the perfection of meditation. Everything is preceded by wisdom, realizing wisdom, and after completely gathering with wisdom, one dedicates it to unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. Thus it is said. The diligence of benefiting sentient beings is: because it is the cause of accomplishing the benefit of both oneself and others, one strives with the body in the eleven places of action, one is diligent with speech, and one is diligent with the mind. The example is also that the boatman, the seeker of wealth, in order to eliminate the poverty of sentient beings, took a jewel from the Isle of Jewels and dropped it into the depths of the ocean, like wanting to dry it up by scooping out the water of the ocean with his hands. Wherever the place of the initial promise is, one does not violate it again, one does not abandon it in the middle, and one does not turn back. If there is a fire burning on the head, or if there is a poisonous snake in one's bosom, just as one strives to avoid it without laziness or contentment, one abandons everything that becomes an obstacle and adverse condition to diligence.
