They do not become angry at anything that inflicts harm and injury to body and life. Since (patience) is also the basis for the arising of all the qualities of the Great and Small Vehicles, one must train in patience. As it is said in the Pramāṇavārttika: "I will certainly receive the retribution of past sins, and I will think of this suffering as ripening. The four truths, mindfulness, and right abandonment, the powers, roots, limbs of enlightenment, and the path, all have patience as their basis, so what wise person would not cultivate patience?" In particular, in order to show how patience is accomplished from the causes of harm, after examining, great harm is not great harm but great benefit, because relying on it, one can obtain the ship of patience and the wish-fulfilling jewel of bodhicitta. Such harm should be offered like offering the holy Dharma. Because without harm, patience will not arise, so the Bengali Paṇḍita always associated with an Ācārya who was prone to anger, saying: "This is the basis of my patience." Therefore, our teacher, the sage who speaks of patience, when King Kronghyung and his consorts were wandering in the forest, the consorts saw the sage and developed faith and listened to the Dharma, the king became angry and cut off the sage's limbs, (the sage said) "By the truth that I have no fault, may the blood turn into milk and the limbs return to their original state." After saying this, it was accomplished. The king and others from then on asked for forgiveness and made offerings. The sage also said: "You cut off my limbs, when I become a Buddha, may I cut off your three poisons with the sword of my wisdom." He made such a prayer. With the fruits of these two accumulations, he became a Buddha under the Bodhi tree, becoming the great guide who liberates sentient beings. Repaying harm with benefit is like offering harm as the holy Dharma. As it is said in the Bodhicaryāvatāra: "Therefore, it is most reasonable to generate the merit of patience towards that enemy, because he is the cause of patience, so one should respect him as protecting the holy Dharma." In particular, if one's own good wishes come first, then by using the evil deeds of others as a cause of suffering, one can also generate aversion to the place of saṃsāra and great compassion, so one must also rely on the asceticism of patience. As the teacher Śāntideva said: "Furthermore, the qualities of suffering can generate"

It eliminates arrogance, generates compassion for beings in samsara, avoids evil and delights in virtue. Therefore, Bodhisattvas should prevent the opposing factors of the three types of patience, namely, hatred, discouragement thinking that it is impossible to practice, and aversion to the path of patience, giving rise to a mind of indifference, etc., and in particular, they should view the faults of anger with great fear. As it is said in the Jataka: The fire of anger makes the face wither, and even with many beautiful ornaments, it is not pleasing. Even when lying on a beautiful bed, the mind is tormented by the arrow of anger. Anger makes one forget the accomplishment of benefits, and driven by anger, one goes to evil paths. Fame and accomplishment are also lost. Also, as it is said in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: All the virtues accumulated in a thousand eons, such as generosity and offerings to the Sugatas, are destroyed by a single moment of anger. Therefore, one should not be angry with a person possessed by a demon, even though he harms us. As it is said in the Four Hundred Verses: The doctor does not get angry with the one possessed by a ghost, just as the Buddha sees the afflictions, but does not get angry with the person associated with the afflictions. As it is said, not being angry with beings is because of generating the aspiration to separate one's mind-stream from afflictions, being weary of the evil deeds of beings and not abandoning benefiting others, protecting from the enemy of anger who destroys all roots of virtue, generating the pleasing adornment of patience even for small harms, and the power of asceticism that burns the fuel of afflictions, and the great stream of water that extinguishes the fire of hatred, and the armor that is not pierced by the arrow of the evil deeds of an untamed mind, and cultivating a beautiful body with the color of gold, etc., that attracts the eyes of beings, and constantly not losing the joy in the heart, therefore, being happy in this life, preventing evil destinies in the next life and granting higher realms and definite goodness, by viewing the benefits of patience in this way, one joyfully accepts it. As it is said in the Compendium of Perfections: For those who have the intention of abandoning the benefit of others, patience is said to be supreme through practice. It perfects all the goodness of the world.

Those with complete majesty, are fully protected from the faults of anger by patience. It is the supreme ornament of the powerful, the pinnacle of strength for those who hold the discipline of asceticism. It is the stream of water that cuts the fire of harmful intent, patience pacifies harm to this and others. Noble beings wear the armor of patience, the arrows of harsh words from the unruly cannot penetrate. Those harsh words become as beautiful as flowers in the sky, and the garland of fame becomes pleasing. Thus it is said. Possessing the beauty of qualities, self-adorned, the skill of accomplishing forms is also patience. Thus and so on. Furthermore, in the Bodhisattva-bhumi, it says: A Bodhisattva initially regards patience as beneficial, because a patient person will not have many enemies in the future, will not have many divisions, will have much happiness and peace of mind, will die without regret, and after the body is destroyed, will be reborn among the gods in the heavens of the good realms. Thinking in this way, regarding patience as beneficial, one also practices patience oneself, and also causes others to truly uphold patience, and also proclaims the praise of patience, and upon seeing a patient person, one's mind rejoices and is always joyful. Thus it is said. From the perspective of ultimate truth, the nature of anger is without characteristics. If deeply examined, the essence of harm is without characteristics, like ripples in water. The moment conceptual thoughts, angry frowns, and harshness disappear, it is empty like the sky, without gain or loss. Therefore, transcendent patience is when, towards the object of harm, one eliminates conceptual thoughts with the four inversions. When examining the mind that possesses the object, the nature of harm arises only from sudden causes, and does not have the power to continuously hold characteristics by its own nature. For example, ripples in water arise in an instant and disappear in an instant. Gathered by actions, the moment the sudden angry frowns accompanied by conceptual thoughts disappear, all remaining mental factors of anger will cease. Why? Because it is only due to having consciousness that it arises momentarily like an illusion through intentional thought. If one abides in that sole suchness, there will be no arising of self-nature.
