Even those who have renounced the world are deceived by things that are incompatible with the meaning of liberation. Monks, it is easy to give up life and die, but it is not so with the breaking and destruction of discipline. Why is that? Because giving up life and dying will only end the cycle of this life, but the breaking and destruction of discipline will lead to separation from good destinies for hundreds of thousands of lifetimes, abandoning happiness and experiencing great falls. Therefore, the Teacher highly praised discipline, saying: The one who keeps discipline will meet the Buddha, the one who keeps discipline is the best of all ornaments, the one who keeps discipline is fragrance and ointment, the one who keeps discipline is the source of all joy, discipline is the cool water that relieves suffering, the one who keeps discipline is praised by all in the world, and through pure discipline one can attain noble states. Even fierce poisonous snakes and great black dragons cannot harm the one who keeps discipline, let alone other beings? The monk who keeps discipline has light, the one who keeps discipline becomes famous and obtains happiness. Just as one cannot see forms without eyes, so too, without discipline one cannot see the Dharma. Just as one cannot walk the path without feet, so too, without discipline one cannot be liberated. Just as a good vase is a container for jewels, so too, discipline is the basis for generating all Dharmas. Just as a broken vase cannot be used as a container for jewels, so too, broken discipline destroys all Dharmas. How can someone who initially has no discipline hope to attain Nirvana later? What need is there for mirrors for those who have no nose or a mutilated nose? Even if the ear has not heard and the eye has not seen, the person who protects the teachings will go to the heavens. The learned, the possessor of learning, the protector of learning, will surely be born in the heavens. How can one associate with women? How can one delight in the royal palace? What essence is there in a bubble? For women, there is nothing to be taken; for kingship, there is nothing to be delighted in; for bubbles, there is no essence; for enjoyments, there is nothing permanent. Enjoyments are like flowing water. What kind of boat, such is the home; what kind of flower, such is the form. Life is like a bubble. After the Blessed One had spoken thus, the monks, including the close retinue, rejoiced. Thus spoke the Blessed One.
