Firstly, by distinguishing the differences between days, dates, and fasting days, there are six fourteenth-day fasts each year. As stated in the Vinaya Explanation: "The first, eighth, and fifteenth, both the waxing and waning halves of the month, these are the dark side, the fourteenth-day fast." Secondly, there are twelve tenth days of the waxing moon, and six waning moons from the Pleiades month to the Little Heat month, totaling eighteen. Furthermore, regarding the statement that one should follow the king when postponing the fast day, it is because it is considered that there are learned scholars of calculation in the king's court. Why? Because the stars should auspiciously follow the guidance of the astrologer. This is known from this. Thirdly, it is called that because it is done to eliminate the ten unsuitable things stipulated by the monk Mahadeva, and to perform activities during auspicious times such as consecrations. Fourthly, it is done to avert or prevent sudden disasters such as epidemics in the world. Fifthly, the fast is done to unite the Sangha. Thus, these three irregular fasts differ only in specifying the time of each during the request ceremony. Here, for the two regular fasts, if a large boundary is set, it is performed there; if both large and small boundaries are set, it starts from the small boundary and enters the large boundary, etc., according to the practice. The performers are the five classes of ordained monks. Furthermore, from the time of the previous fast day until this one, check whether you have broken any vows. If you have, you must confess, restrain yourself, and follow the order of blessings. Then, the materials for the ghanta (召集僧众的犍椎) to gather the Sangha are: From the sutra: "Sandalwood, vilva, palasha, ashvattha and red sandalwood, Chinese ash, tala, kimashuka, shishapa and tamala, amra, tarabuka, emblic myrobalan, tindisara, ashoka. Even if all these are not available, try to use olea." The measurement is in finger-widths measured in water, it should be eighty-four finger-widths, the width should be six finger-widths, and the height should also be two finger-widths. Measure with the joints of the fingers, the measurement of the four corners is two fingers. It should be very clear to maintain good equality and flatness. The two ends are like the head of a frog. Then, the mallet used for striking should also be made from the same wood. The measurement is twelve finger-widths.

Like the two mongoose heads at the top of an umbrella, the measure of holding should also be the same. Thus it is said. Regarding this, the Dharmakaya is free from the three: arising, ceasing, and abiding; therefore, from the very beginning, it is unborn and virtuous. As it is said, it is placed very well, and placed on the top of the temple or above the gatehouse. The one who strikes it can be either the five kinds of monks or a layperson who observes the Uposatha. First, they prostrate to the Three Jewels and then take it to strike. Even if the way of striking is written as "Shangtsa," the Sanskrit pronunciation is "Ṣaṭja," with three "Śad" sounds preceding it. To gather the Sangha, strike it three times, and at the end, strike three loud sounds. To gather for activities such as Uposatha and listening to the Dharma, strike it once, then strike three times, or strike three times, then strike twice. To dispel impurities, do not strike it, let it dissipate. To avert harm, it is uncertain, that is, strike each time thirty-five or thirty-six times, choosing one of the two methods, gradually increasing the sound from the first to the eighteenth time, and gradually decreasing the sound from the nineteenth time to the end of the count. Thus, when all the materials and conditions for striking the bell are complete, it has great benefits. The Sutra of the Bell says: Mother Prajnaparamita resides in the form of the bell. It also says: Whenever a king is in the country, and the bell rings, there will be splendor and fame, wishes and good harvests. And so on. Hearing the bell at the four times, those will attain Bodhi. Whoever rejoices from the heart will be liberated without a doubt. Such are the benefits, and the faults of harming the country, discord among the Sangha, and the inability to restrain, due to incorrect materials and striking methods, are also explained therein. After that, the Sangha gathers, remembering whether they have fallen into the ranks of karma? If there is doubt, then receive blessings in front of the mantra holder. The way to purify the continuum is not to stand, but to squat, and request blessings to eliminate transgressions, thus awakening awareness. Venerable ones, please listen, today is the fourteenth or fifteenth Uposatha of the Sangha, I, the monk named so-and-so, again
