All monks will commit defeat. As stated in the Treasury of Knowledge: 'For the sake of a single purpose such as war, all participants are like the author.' The fourth is the defeat of lying: In the vast lotus city, five hundred ordained people were judged to be defeated for falsely claiming to have attained superior human qualities. The basis is the object to whom the speech is addressed, which must possess five characteristics of human language and be included in a continuum other than oneself: able to speak, able to understand meaning, consciousness existing naturally, not a hermaphrodite, and not a person with two sets of genitals. The speech uttered refers to any supramundane qualities superior to the desire realm, from the first dhyana to Buddhahood. For example, regarding worldly phenomena, it is like saying one has seen the forms of humans and non-humans, gods, nagas, etc., the thirteen types of beings, without actually seeing them, or saying one has heard sounds without actually hearing them, or saying that they have come to see me, and engaging in conversations with them, etc., these four situations; being in the same group as these four situations; they see me, hear my voice, come to see me, and they engage in conversations with me, etc., these eight categories. Regarding supramundane phenomena, before attaining the path of seeing of a Shravaka, saying that one is a stream-enterer; without only one life remaining in the desire realm, saying that one has attained the once-returner fruit; without exhausting the birth in the desire realm, saying that one is a non-returner; without abandoning the objects to be abandoned of the peak of existence, saying that one has attained the Arhat fruit; without attaining the result based on the twelve links of dependent origination, saying that one is a Pratyekabuddha; and saying that one has attained the superior qualities of the noble ones without actually attaining them, etc. By changing one's thoughts and perceptions, with the intention of lying, with the motivation of wanting to lie, through practice, even without qualities that surpass others such as clairvoyance, one claims to have attained superior human qualities in a fabricated way, using language that meets the following six characteristics, or agreeing with what others say: it is one's own language, related to oneself, without error, clear, and explicitly stated. Ultimately, others also think so.

Ragoṇa, it is defeat. Having spoken thus, whichever of the four is used, if the causes and conditions of each, or all the limbs are not complete, it is a gross offense, and if complete, it becomes defeat. Similarly, concerning killing, if one kills a non-human being, it is a gross offense in the form of the actual deed; if one kills a domestic animal with a name, it is in accordance with defeat, or a similar misdeed; going to war is in accordance (with defeat); if one kills an emanation or an image, it is a misdeed to be restrained. Concerning taking what is not given, if one takes what is possessed by a non-human, it is a gross offense similar to defeat; during the act, if the thought of stealing arises, it is a misdeed to be confessed; seizing by force, hiding for the sake of laughter, and sitting or lying down without permission are all misdeeds to be restrained. Concerning unchaste conduct, emitting semen with lustful thoughts, as well as touching a woman, speaking obscene words, acting as a matchmaker, etc., are all in accordance (with defeat), or misdeeds similar to the actual deed of defeat. Pleasure arising from improper attention, and pleasure arising from the imprints of dreams, etc., are all to be restrained. Concerning lying, divisive speech, complaining, etc., are all misdeeds similar to defeat; hinting, and relying on a slight fabrication to slander, etc., are all misdeeds to be restrained. These are common with a novice monk. The thirteen Saṃghāvaśeṣa are from the words of teaching the path of virtue, if this offense occurs, bedding, food, etc., are used as leftovers after the elder, middle, and younger Saṃgha, therefore it is Saṃghāvaśeṣa. As such, in his continuum, there still remains a residue of pure vows, relying on the Saṃgha, if the majority of the Saṃgha confess the offenses that violate the vows, they can be purified, but because they are in the lower ranks of the Saṃgha and use the leftovers of food and drink, they are called Saṃghāvaśeṣa. There are also divisions within them: five kinds of attachment to internal sentient beings, and two kinds of attachment to external resources, totaling seven kinds arising from the side of desire; two kinds arising from harm; and four kinds arising from instruction, totaling thirteen kinds. The first is the Saṃghāvaśeṣa of expulsion: The basis of the story is that it was established in Śrāvastī, prohibiting (the behavior), enjoying the pleasure of desire in the limbs of oneself or others in places that are not passable roads or not three roads.
