Because one cannot protect everything. Whatever those may be, they must be protected until the end of life. Among them, what is included in the sound of half of the four roots is sexual misconduct, and the statement of the distinction of celibacy. By the power of King Loving-kindness, in the ritual of bestowing the upasatha on the five Yaksha brothers, non-celibacy is described as sexual misconduct, considering that it is easy for householders to protect. In the Treasury it is said: Sexual misconduct is extremely despicable, easy to do, and one does not do it in order to obtain (merit). Upasatha is: For those who live at home, because it is difficult to practice celibacy at all times, the eight-branch fast is taught for the purpose of combining it with one day and one night of celibacy. From the ten precepts of the ordained: Accepting gold and silver is allowed for the sake of raising children. Dancing and garlands, because the fault is small, are counted as one. Whoever is called the eight-branch precepts, constantly protects without restriction, is a layperson like Chandragomin. For him, on top of the ten things that a novice should abandon, accepting gold and silver is not forbidden for laypeople, considering the need to raise children. Similarly, dancing etc., garlands etc., although novices count them separately, for laypeople, because the fault is small, they are counted as one. This is what is said in the Section on Matters. In reality, other than accepting gold and silver, all the other nine must be abandoned by those who keep the upasatha. But merely nominally it is called the eight-branch precepts. In the Letter to a Friend it says: Non-harming and stealing, non-unchastity and lying, drinking alcohol and eating at the wrong time, attachment to high beds, abandoning the distinctions of singing and garlands, following the precepts of an arhat, possessing these eight branches, the fast bestows on men and women a desirable heavenly body. Here it shows that the result of the one-day-and-one-night fast is that one is born in whichever of the six desire realms one desires. A branch is a general branch, this is what is said in the great commentary on the Letter to a Friend. Thus, the object of protection of the upasatha vows, promising to protect for one day and one night, protecting is the characteristic of one's own vows, this is what is said in the commentary on the Treasury of Abhidharma: One should take it on the day one protects, first taking it and then

There is nothing that does not need to be taken. After saying this, laypeople establish seasonal precepts in order to take and protect the fast on days such as the eighth, fifteenth, thirtieth, and four major festivals. If a male or female lay devotee who possesses these precepts takes them, it becomes a Uposatha, because they increase precepts and avoid faults. Therefore, if one can constantly protect these eight precepts of the near-dwelling, rather than occasionally, as a basis for merit, one is called a constant attendant layperson, like Prince Great Compassion and Teacher Chandragomin. However, although the Sarvastivadins do not accept this, Vasubandhu accepts it according to the view of the Sthavira school. The celibate layperson and these two are not laypeople because they have abandoned their families, and they are not renunciates because they have not taken the novice vows. In the past, during the time when the teachings flourished, the great teacher Chandrakirti also seemed to rely solely on this kind of Pratimoksha vow. Furthermore, what is known as a layperson who takes refuge in the Three Jewels is merely designating someone as a layperson for becoming a Buddhist. Because this is only the basis for all vows, and vows do not arise from it itself, it is said in the commentary on the Abhidharmakosha, "It is merely good conduct, not a vow." However, the Sunyavada and Sautrantika schools consider it reasonable that even if that is not the vow of a layperson, it meets the definition of a layperson, because the Nirvana Sutra says, "Whoever takes refuge in the Buddha is a true layperson." The novice vows are to abstain from killing, stealing the property of others, engaging in impure conduct, lying, drinking intoxicating alcohol, etc., dancing, wearing garlands, etc., sitting or lying on high and large beds, eating at improper times, and accepting gold and silver, etc. Holding these ten precepts is its characteristic. Among them, the qualities of morality are not degenerating, being without fault, not being mixed, not being defiled, not being stained, having autonomy, being praised by the wise, and accomplishing samadhi, which are eight. Among them, not degenerating means that after taking it properly, one has not violated any of them. If one violates even one, it will degenerate, and if one violates many precepts, it will become faulty, and if there are neither of these two, it is without fault. Not being mixed with unwholesome things, so it is not mixed. Not being mixed with existence and enjoyment.
