Therefore, encourage others to practice generosity, and provide the means for those who lack resources to make offerings, allowing them to make offerings to the Three Jewels. If you yourself lack resources, then through blameless patience, accumulate wealth through various means of labor that you have diligently performed, and thus engage in the work of generosity. Do not become an obstacle to others' acts of generosity, nor retract those things that were originally intended to be given as offerings. Furthermore, one should discern what is appropriate to give and what is not. Whatever object it may be, as long as it immediately separates from the causes of the lower realms and brings temporary happiness, and ultimately leads to abandoning evil and practicing virtue, or even if it does not immediately bring happiness but ultimately brings benefit, a Bodhisattva should give it. If what is given brings immediate happiness but ultimately causes harm, or if it causes suffering both temporarily and ultimately, it should not be given. For example, in the first case, if a Bodhisattva gives away livestock and other living beings that he owns to others, it will lead to killing or torture, and so on. Furthermore, if one becomes like a king, it is inappropriate to seize the children and wives of others to give away, or to take from the possessions of parents, the Sangha, the Three Jewels, servants, and other resources to give to others, or to give in ways that harm others, or to give items unsuitable for those upholding vows, or leftovers of food and drink, and so on. Similarly, even if out of pure compassion, the time comes to give away one's body and life, one should not give away something as important as a limb for a trivial need. If one has a full intention to give, but the other party does not accept the body, and giving the body itself is more necessary for accomplishing the benefit of many sentient beings, or if it is demanded by arrogant demon gods and unruly beings possessed by them, or if it is demanded by the insane and mentally disturbed, one should not give to them because they are tormented by their unstable minds. If one gives, it is said to be a transgression. Similarly, one should not give to those who are not upright, and to those who do not abandon yakshas and rakshasas, otherwise one will be oppressed by their powerful strength, and to those who are ungrateful and forgetful of their vows.

And, giving away wives and servants, etc., giving unsuitable food and drink to the sick, giving to heretics who seek disputes, and to those who do not respect religion but regard scriptures as wealth and ask for them, and giving away images and meanings of scriptures that are disguised as Dharma, and giving land to hunters, and giving rivers to fishermen, and giving adversaries to enemies, and giving more than the three robes to bodhisattvas who have already renounced, etc., these are not allowed. For these, do not say in harsh words, "I will not give this to you," but rather imply it with skillful means. If it is someone who can understand, say this: "Do not misunderstand that I am not giving this to you because I am attached to this beautiful thing." Like this, practitioners dedicate and hold robes, etc., after examining them with the Khenpo and Acharya. The implements of the Bodhisattvas are dedicated and offered to the Buddhas and Buddha-sons, and after they have been offered, they are held as if entrusted to oneself. Therefore, taking and giving away others' possessions without permission is a great fault for both of us. After making him understand this, give from other aspects of wealth and objects without changing his mind. In general, our implements, also, from the depths of our hearts, dedicate and hold them in the manner of entrusting, which will generate great merit. Also, those who are suitable for giving, just as I have dedicated and given them to the Buddhas and Buddha-sons, I think there is nothing that they have not given to sentient beings, so it is permissible to give, which is distinguished by the difference between the thoughts of permission and prohibition. Like this, if it is not because of knowing the necessity, but rather one's own mind is overwhelmed by stinginess, then relying on the words of the Dharma, one will deceive others with false lies. To this, in a strong request, say this: "My ability is still small, and the roots of virtue have not yet matured. I am a beginner in the Mahayana, controlled by a mind that does not give up, and I abide in views close to acceptance and attachment to self and what belongs to me. Therefore, please forgive me, noble one, and do not be sad. I will do my best to fulfill the wishes of you and all sentient beings." Saying this three times to the beggar, the other person still does not believe.
