The first person should be encouraged to recite. After hearing much, encourage them to dwell in solitude. Having become completely solitary, encourage them to become a virtuous friend. Having become a virtuous friend, encourage them to be happy and at ease. Having become happy and at ease, encourage them to know the time. Having known the time, encourage them to be fearless. Having become fearless, encourage them to understand the meaning. Having understood the meaning, encourage them to follow the Dharma. Having followed the Dharma, encourage them to be without delusion. Having become without delusion, encourage them to be completely joyful. Thus it is said. Therefore, one should eliminate the afflictions in one's own mind-stream by relying on the instructions of a virtuous friend, and by diligently engaging in listening, contemplation, and meditation on the scriptures of the Sugata and the treatises explained by the noble and accomplished beings. Furthermore, by loving sentient beings, having compassion, and having faith in the words of the Tathagata, one transforms into great benefit for others by diligently reading the Mahayana scriptures. Whoever reads, remembers, recites, or writes and commissions the writing of this sutra, the ripening of their karma is inconceivable. In general, this is just an example, but in particular, when the teacher Vasubandhu recited the sutra, the pigeons who heard it lightened their karma, and after their lifespan ended, they were reborn as the disciple Uspa, who became the teacher Lodro Tenpa (Blo-gros brtan-pa). Furthermore, there are stories of gods listening from the sky when practitioners who abide in great love and compassion recite the scriptures. Similarly, in the places where those who previously possessed the mind of enlightenment resided, the minds of the local deities and others became gentle, and that place was complete with auspicious qualities. Even if they did not directly teach the Dharma, merely reciting the profound words and meanings of the Dharma, or even just sprinkling a little water, has the merit of Dharma giving, which makes their minds gentle and pleased. Therefore, one should aim to eliminate the karma and afflictions of all sentient beings, and with the mind of enlightenment, recite the profound Dharma and focus on the giving of Dharma. Truly

Giving away pens, ink, books, and other items, as well as teaching worldly skills such as crafts that are harmless and benefit Buddhism and sentient beings, and even telling stories, speeches that incline people towards the Dharma, and even a small amount of discussion about good and evil, and the law of karma, can naturally bring great benefit to others in this degenerate age of Buddhism. Therefore, liberating oneself and bestowing the benefit of the Dharma on others is the most important form of giving, because material things and the like only temporarily relieve suffering. Therefore, according to the capacity of those to be taught, commonly teaching the collections of the Hearers, Solitary Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Vidyadharas is middling. Among these, the discipline of mindfulness, faith in the Dharma of omniscience, patience in enduring the scolding of others, diligence in desiring to progress, meditation that dedicates the virtue of a mind unmixed with the lesser vehicles to perfect enlightenment, and wisdom that knows the nature of reality to be emptiness, are the six perfections, which are explained in detail in the Great Commentary on the Eight Thousand Verses. For those of supreme intelligence, placing them in the inconceivable state like the sky is clearly shown by the directly quoted scripture itself. Furthermore, a householder Bodhisattva mainly engages in material and fearlessness giving, while an ordained person should practice Dharma giving, as stated in the Bodhisattva Pratimoksha: "Shariputra, if a householder Bodhisattva were to fill Buddha-fields as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River with the seven precious substances and offer them to the Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Enlightened Buddhas, it would be less than if an ordained Bodhisattva were to teach a four-line verse, which would generate much more merit. Shariputra, the Tathagata does not permit the ordained to engage in material giving." The meaning of this is that material giving is mostly related to householders and is easy to do. Therefore, if the discipline of the ordained is damaged, they will fall and accumulate negative karma.
