And the giving of family, the extremely thorough giving is, it is difficult to do, to give head and limbs. Regarding this, the nature of giving is non-attachment, which is the antidote to attachment to enjoyment. As stated in the Bodhisattva-bhumi: What is the nature of giving? It is the thought that arises together with the non-attachment of the Bodhisattva, without regard for all possessions and one's own body, and the actions of body and speech that completely give away the objects to be given, and the actions of body and speech that are caused by the virtuous mind of giving, all of these are. Classified, there are Dharma giving, material giving, and fearlessness giving. Among them, from the perspective of necessity, Dharma giving is mentioned in the initial land examination, but from the perspective of function, here material giving and fearlessness giving are combined. Among them, the first point is that it is not necessary to have a large amount of objects to give away. Even if all of one's own property has already been given to sentient beings, and one only has a little bit left, one should think that it belongs to sentient beings, and on this basis, one should also accept the mind of giving from multiple aspects. For example, if this great earth were to become food and drink, I would be able to relieve the suffering of all the impoverished, such as the pretas. Like this, one should develop a vast mind of giving that pacifies the suffering of others, and like a snake shedding its skin, destroy the clinging of miserliness. As stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: The giving of a Bodhisattva is, not attached, not clinging, without attachment, and not attachment itself, not attached, not clinging, without attachment. Previously, one who competed with Anathapindika's giving, because he could not match him, abandoned all his wealth and became a renunciate, and as a result, he was prophesied to surpass Anathapindika. Therefore, those who have wealth should especially give, starting with giving a little food and drink, and then gradually increasing the power of wisdom, learning to give clothes, dwellings, utensils, vehicles, mounts, elephants, and entire countries. As stated in the Jataka tales, the king of Kosala once gave a handful of warm porridge to four shramanas, and as a result of this, he obtained the kingdom.

For a merchant who cannot be suppressed, when a beggar asks, he cannot say no. Even if others steal from his own home, he should especially cultivate joy. When he himself becomes poor, he should give alms from the money he earns from cutting grass and selling it. He should learn to be like a deceased king who built a permanent sacrificial hut and gave alms. It is said in the Sutras that the accumulation of merit is perfected by material giving, and the accumulation of wisdom is perfected by the giving of Dharma, and these two should be accomplished in every way. What is material giving? For example, giving, great giving, and extreme giving. Giving is giving food, clothing, and elephants to others. And so on. The field of giving, the field of merit is good, but do not think that those with afflictions are the opposite of this, because this will hinder the realization of the equality of Dharma. In particular, giving with compassion to inferior fields is the custom of the Great Vehicle. As it is said in the Sutras: All sentient beings should have equal and impartial minds, without discrimination. If one thinks that the Three Jewels are my field of merit, and that animals and others are not, then that Bodhisattva will not realize the equality of Dharma. Therefore, the Three Jewels and the Lama are good fields for giving, while animals and others are not, just like sowing seeds in a salty field. If you think like this, it will not become the Dharma of a Bodhisattva. So it is said. So, choosing the field of giving refers to those who are dull-witted, beginners, have not trained their minds, and are not accustomed to compassion. As it is said in the "Straightforwardly Asked" Sutra: There are five kinds of unsurpassed giving: the Tathagata, the Sangha, the speaker, the sick, and the parents. Dharma, and others: Even if they are not noble, parents, and the sick, and the speaker of Dharma, and the Bodhisattva in the last existence, the merit is immeasurable. So it is said. Thus, even if the object of giving is small, if there is no expectation of maturation and fruition, it will become a pure field of merit. Even if the object is vast,
