After that, patience, generosity, and discipline. Thus, the noble Nagarjuna said, "Generosity and discipline, the Dharma of patience is especially excellent, taught to householders, always meditate on the essence of compassion." As it is said, the discipline mentioned is the upasaka, meaning to be separated from sins. If considering the ordained, in the ritual of taking vows from the Compendium of Sutras, it says, "In the determination of the discipline of vows, one should follow the Buddha." Thus, the main thing for accumulating merit is the vows and determination, as well as meditation and the rest. As it is said in the Gandavyuha Sutra, "By this, diligently strive for the other shore, may the Bodhicitta never be forgotten." Like that. That (six perfections) divided into ten based on the antidote to what is to be abandoned, in the Madhyantavibhaga it says, "Generosity, discipline, patience, diligence, meditation, wisdom to the other shore, skillful means, power, aspiration, wisdom, these are established as the ten perfections." Thus, it is divided based on eliminating stinginess, immoral discipline, anger, laziness, distraction, wrong wisdom, unskillful means, obstacles to power, non-fulfillment of aspirations, obstacles to knowledge, and so on. If considering the six perfections, the first five, such as generosity, are the accumulation of merit, the cause of higher rebirth; the latter is the unerring cause of definite goodness. Thus, however, one should not mistakenly believe that the two directly experience their respective results. If one practices with the accumulation of merit without skillful means and devoid of wisdom, then its result will only be a large body and enjoyment in samsara, and longevity. If it is grasped by skillful means and profound wisdom, then it is very suitable to become the cause of omniscience, so it is shown that skillful means and wisdom need to be related. Thus, in the Ratnavali it says, "The form body, if briefly summarized, is born from the accumulation of the king's merit." Like that. If considering the ten perfections, the first three of the remaining four are merit, and the latter wisdom is the cause of definite goodness. If it is reasonable to establish wisdom as the cause, then in the Manjushri Illusion Sutra it says, "The one with merit is the accumulation of merit, the wise one is the source of wisdom."

Thus, it is clear. Therefore, what Mahayana practitioners should accomplish is to not abide in samsara with the wisdom of realizing Suchness, and to not abide in nirvana with the method associated with great compassion, that is, the state of non-abiding nirvana, which needs to be accomplished through the two accumulations divided by conventional truth and ultimate truth, or through method and wisdom. As stated in the *Inconceivable Secret Sutra*: "With the accumulation of wisdom, all defilements will be abandoned; with the accumulation of merit, all sentient beings will be closely cared for. World-Honored One, since it is so, Bodhisattva Mahasattvas should strive for the accumulation of merit and wisdom." Thus, through methods such as generosity, one obtains the perfect and abundant results of great enjoyment, such as the Form Body, Pure Land, and retinue. Because of clinging, the Tathagatas do not abide even in complete nirvana. Because wisdom is completely pure, the root of samsara, which is inverted, is completely abandoned, therefore, those in samsara also do not abide in the path free from exaggeration and depreciation. As stated in the *Arya Dharma Samgraha Sutra*: "The Tathagata is born from method and wisdom, and it should be known that it is also possible to place the defilements of others upon oneself." Therefore, from all the profound oral instruction's stages of practice, first is taking refuge, generating Bodhicitta, prostrations, the seven-branch prayer, mandala offerings, the hundred-syllable mantra, guru and deity yoga, etc., which show that practice is done with numbers that rely on the limit of hundreds of thousands, this is the aspect of method. All of these are practiced by being grasped by the wisdom that does not conceptualize the three spheres, this is the union of method and wisdom. As it is said in the *Arya Adhimukti Power Increasing Sutra*: "What is skillful in method? It is being skilled in knowing the collection of all dharmas. What is wisdom? It is being skilled in knowing that all dharmas are without differentiation." Thus, mandala offerings, offerings, water torma, etc., are generosity, and practicing acceptance and rejection without error in accordance with the entrance of one's own vehicle is moral discipline, and practicing virtue is asceticism.

Patience is patience. Exhorting oneself and spending day and night in virtuous practice is diligence. Holding the mind directly and straightforwardly on the object is meditation. These, when taken with the view of the three spheres being utterly pure, are wisdom. Within that, collecting virtuous dharmas with the seven-limbed practice and so forth, and being taken with the generation of bodhicitta and dedication, also completes the ethics of benefiting sentient beings. Among the four means of gathering, gathering with generosity is easy. Sweet speech is discipline. Turning others to virtue with talks of patience and diligence, and acting beneficially, is benefiting others with instructions. Being in accord with the meaning is that one primarily practices abandoning what is taught to those to be tamed, because this is the way of abandoning. This is especially important because one who has not tamed oneself cannot tame others. As the Tenth Dharma Sutra says: "If one strives to make all sentient beings tame and peaceful, but one is not tame, not peaceful, and not guarded, then it is not one's own part, one should be peaceful, tame, and guarded." Some ignorant people who have not been taken by a virtuous friend, secretly abandon the meaning of the inconceivable sutras that are suitable for those with extremely sharp faculties, and focus on the aspect of means, this is not a fault of the Dharma, but a fault of the person. In the Condensed Explanation, it says: "Among them, foolish people say this: Bodhisattvas should only study the Prajnaparamita, and they slander the remaining Paramitas. Maitreya, what do you think? When I was the king of Kashi, was it a corrupt wisdom that I gave my own flesh to the hawk for the sake of the pigeon?" Maitreya replied, "Bhagavan, it was not." The Bhagavan said, "Maitreya, when I was practicing the conduct of a Bodhisattva, did the roots of virtue that I accumulated, which were endowed with the six Paramitas, cause harm?" Maitreya replied, "It was not." The Bhagavan said, "Maitreya, you have perfected the Paramita of generosity for sixty kalpas, and you have perfected the Paramita of discipline for sixty kalpas.
