The nature of reality, which is emptiness in essence, in which all elaborations of acceptance are naturally pacified, is the wisdom of the ultimate arising from thought, transcending mind and being free from speech, thought, and expression. As Nāgārjuna's "Ratnāvalī" states: "Things that are accepted do not exist even as tiny particles, because they have no origin from the beginning, like the son of a barren woman. For example, if one asks a barren woman, 'Where is your son?' she cannot speak because she does not have one." Thus it is said. Secondly, the dependent arising of samsara is: The objects of appearance, earth, water, fire, wind, space, mountains and forests, stacked houses, all arise from conditioned causes. Samsara is dependent arising. Thus, in profound sutras such as the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra, the consciously spoken words about the ālaya-vijñāna (storehouse consciousness) initially serve to refute the tenets of the tirthikas (non-Buddhists), leading to a great meaning, and later, the meaning and logic of the profound scriptures serve to abandon the clinging to the existence of the ālaya-vijñāna. Here, for the moment, the dependent arisings of samsara are: In the state of non-conceptual distraction, the clinging to the objects of appearance is the ālaya, and the consciousness that does not cling to the clear appearance is the vijñāna. It relates to the objects of the five senses, negating, affirming, accepting, and rejecting, and through dependent arising, it is named the illusion of the seven consciousnesses. The five elements, mountains, forests, houses, pottery, cloth, spinning wheels, sprouts from seeds, and butter from yogurt, all material things that arise from conditioned causes are external dependent arisings, arising in a way that depends on each other. As it is said in the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra: "Mahāmati, just as pottery arises from a lump of clay, cloth from thread, a spinning wheel from oil, a sprout from a seed, and butter from yogurt through human effort such as churning, so it is, Mahāmati, that external dependent arising is the arising of the latter from the former." Thus it is said. Internal dependent arising is: From ignorance arises action, and likewise, the connection of mutual dependence up to old age and death is internal dependent arising.

The tenets of the Mahayana have already been explained. Here, from the perspective of the Sravaka Pitaka, the aggregates at the time when afflictions manifest in the previous life are ignorance. Similarly, the five aggregates at the time of accumulating karma in the previous life are formations. Then, the five aggregates at the time of conception in the mother's womb are consciousness. Then, experiencing the five stages of change from the curd-like state onwards, the five aggregates up to the arising of the sense bases are name and form. The five aggregates from the arising of the sense bases until one is unable to experience objects are the six sense bases. From the moment the senses awaken to objects until one cannot distinguish between pleasure and pain, the five aggregates are contact. From being able to distinguish between pleasure and pain until one cannot experience the pleasure of sexual intercourse, the five aggregates are feeling. From being able to engage in sexual intercourse until one has not taken desired objects, the five aggregates are craving. The five aggregates at the time of taking desired objects are grasping. Then, the five aggregates at the time of accumulating karma are becoming. Then, the five aggregates that arise from the mother's womb at the beginning of the next life are birth. Then, the name and form, the six sense bases, contact, craving, and the four feelings of the next life are old age and death. The Abhidharmakosha states: 'Two each at the beginning and end, eight in the middle are fully complete. Ignorance is the affliction of the past, formations are past karma, consciousness is the aggregate of conception, name and form are after that, the six sense bases are up to the union of the three, contact is the ability to know pleasure and pain, feeling is up to sexual intercourse, craving is attachment to enjoying sexual intercourse, grasping is running around to obtain enjoyment, becoming is the cause that produces the result, conception is birth, up to feeling is old age and death.' Also, in the Salu Jangpa it says: 'Whatever is name and form, the six sense bases, that is old age and death. It is the same from birth to feeling.' The way such twelve links of dependent origination are completed is twofold: instantaneous and continuous. The first is, the instant of complete action.
