If seen, there is no inconsistency. One should have conviction and generate faith because the noble Sangha of the cessation and path truths of the excellent Mahayana Dharma resides in the center of irreversible Bodhisattvas. As it is said in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: 'Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, are always present without obstruction, In front of all of them, I am always present.' Having thought like this, one should feel ashamed, respectful, and fearful, just like towards a true holy teacher. Like this, one should invite from all directions, and one need not worry about being harmed by local evil forces. The virtuous deity also said: If one has not found a teacher, then one should face the Sangha that possesses the Buddha, Bodhisattvas, and vows, because all those who reach the other shore of Bodhi have unobstructed eyes. One should receive (the vows) with strong faith and special devotion to them. Thus it is said. The actual situation of receiving is: do not focus on beautifying the scriptures by emphasizing ornate language, but focus on taming one's mind by emphasizing benefit, and like the tradition of Master Shantideva, make the entirety of the Bodhisattva treasury without deficiency. Through the verse 'Until the essence of Bodhichitta,' one performs uncommon refuge. Here, if we distinguish between the ways of taking the vows of aspirational Bodhichitta and action Bodhichitta, then the great scholar Krishna's commentary on the difficult points of the Bodhisattvacharyavatara says: If one wants to generate Bodhichitta, then one should recite 'Just as the Sugatas of the past, first generated the mind of Bodhi' three times. From that time on, one is called a Bodhisattva and possesses the qualities mentioned earlier. If one wants to take both Bodhichitta and the vows, then one should recite 'Just as the Sugatas of the past, first generated the mind of Bodhi, and dwelt in the training of Bodhisattvas in sequence. Likewise, for the benefit of beings, I generate the mind of Bodhi, and likewise, I will diligently train in the training in sequence' three times. Thus it is said. Although this is the case, following the statement in the Compendium of Trainings that considers the action mind and the vows to be of the same meaning.

Here, the distinction between the rituals of aspiration and engagement is made, without considering the vows as separately divided. That is, merely thinking, "I shall attain Buddhahood for the sake of others" is just generating an ordinary mind of enlightenment. Why? Because, as stated in the 'Lamp for the Path': 'Without turning back, make a firm vow, generate the mind of enlightenment.' Like this, generating the mind of enlightenment focusing on all sentient beings, vowing not to abandon it until enlightenment is attained, is the characteristic of the aspiration mind. If one is able to learn its precepts, like 'As the Sugatas of old first generated the mind of enlightenment, likewise, for the benefit of beings, I shall generate the mind of enlightenment,' etc., understanding the connection, one takes the aspiration mind. The ritual for the engaging mind is taken in the usual way, because in reality, the distinction is made based on whether one can learn the precepts or not. In the precepts of a Bodhisattva, the two lines, 'Thus, abiding in order,' should be understood as distinguishing whether or not one can bestow the engaging vows.

Receiving from the Lama, the faults of samsara and the benefits of liberation. In particular, the Lama himself should cultivate the mind by explaining the nature of bodhicitta. The words to be received are explained in the chapter on discipline, or received according to the ritual explained in the Compendium of Trainings. Alternatively, the receiver bathes, puts on good clothes, generates the perception of the spiritual friend as the Buddha, prostrates, offers a mandala, makes offerings, offers the seven-branch offering, kneels with the right knee on the ground, and joins the palms. Without mental obstacles such as anger, with weariness of the extremes of samsara, free from the two extremes of attachment to peace, with joy and delight in the mind of enlightenment, having trained the mind in the meaning of the four immeasurables, one should repeat after this. Just as the thousand and two Buddhas of the Good Aeon, the Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Enlightened Buddhas, and Bhagavad-s, and the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas who dwell on the great earth, have generated the mind of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, so too, I, (name), for the sake of generating the mind of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, from this time until I reach the essence of enlightenment, take refuge in the Buddhas, the Bhagavad-s, the best of the two-legged. I take refuge in the holy Dharma, the best of the peaceful and desireless, the great vehicle, especially the excellent Dharma. I take refuge in the Sangha, the best of assemblies, the noble Bodhisattvas, the irreversible Sangha. Saying this three times is the basis for establishing the vows, as it says in the Seventy Stanzas on Refuge: Although vows are all dependent on refuge, there are no vows for those who have not gone for refuge. As quoted earlier. In the ritual composed by Jowo, there is one request for each object of refuge. Then, in order to hold the mind, manifesting great compassion, with the single-pointed intention to benefit all sentient beings, I request all the Buddhas and Bhagavad-s dwelling in the ten directions to pay attention to me. I request the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas dwelling on the ten bhumis to pay attention to me.
