Commentary on Chapter Eight of Engaging in the Bodhisattva's Deeds. Commentary on Chapter Eight of Engaging in the Bodhisattva's Deeds. Thus, after making the mind-stream suitable with the nature of aspiration, the four immeasurables, in order to mainly show the meaning of generating the mind of enlightenment, which is the nature of entering, it is said that the excellence of merit is for the sake of what is gained, the mind of enlightenment obtained by the four immeasurables, led by the illusory means of the chariot of aspiration and engagement, causes the evil view of peace to decline. Thus, with the adornment of words, the cause and effect of arising and accomplishing are explained in the manner of what should be abandoned and what should be adopted, that is, by seeking the meaning of what is gained, the merit aimed at it increases, and the result caused by the four immeasurables is the precious mind of enlightenment, the complete superior intention. The King of Sages, even after thinking and contemplating for countless eons, did not see anything superior to this single Dharma of the Great Vehicle. As it is said in the Sutra Requested by Maitreya: Maitreya, if a Bodhisattva possesses one Dharma, he abandons all evil destinies, does not fall into the hands of sinful friends, and quickly attains unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment. What is the one Dharma? It is this complete superior intention, the mind of enlightenment. Maitreya, if one possesses this Dharma, he abandons all evil destinies, does not fall into the hands of sinful friends, and quickly attains unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment. Thus it is. The path of the noble Hearers and Solitary Realizers is itself an evil view of those who, with their own peaceful minds, temporarily cling to a place of rest. Saraha said: Entering emptiness devoid of compassion, one does not attain the supreme path. Thus it is. Therefore, the absence of deceit and trickery that aims at one's own benefit is called superior intention. As it is said in the Bodhisattva Pitaka: Those who wish to quickly attain unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment should train in the superior intention, the mind of enlightenment. Thus it is said. Those who are bound by sin and suffering in the prison of samsara, although they have generated the mind of enlightenment, are pleased to obtain the crown of the name of the Victorious One's child, and even despise the gods and humans of the world. Thus they abide.

It is also appropriate to generate the mind with a view to the benefits of the moment. Sins such as hatred, and the multitude of sufferings caused by them, bind sentient beings in the prison of samsara in extremely many ways, that is, in the home bound by craving. However, at the moment of generating the mind of enlightenment, one will obtain the name of the son of the Sugatas, and become an object worthy of worship by the world with gods. The Gandavyuha Sutra praises: "One who possesses the mind of enlightenment is the great offering place for all beings in the world with gods." If someone thinks that the mind of enlightenment arises only in the first bodhisattva ground, the Joyful, then how can a common person who is troubled by bondage generate the mind of enlightenment? This is because the former is directed towards the Dharma as an object, while the latter refers to the appearance of taking and abandoning properly. Therefore, even a non-noble person can generate the mind of enlightenment, which should be understood from the profound sutras. The opposite of this is: From the dark clouds of karma and affliction, occasionally a good deed flashes like a thunderbolt, like an aquatic plant, the fruit weakens the roots. Like this, a good deed that is not grasped by the supreme mind of enlightenment, even if one obtains the fruit of gods and humans, hearers, or solitary realizers, will eventually exhaust its power. For example, aquatic plants, reeds, and bamboos, when their fruits ripen, their roots also wither, which is obvious, like the bending of a bamboo. The Jataka-mala also says: "The mule dies from its own pregnancy, the reed and bamboo wither from their fruits, and the aquatic plant decays from its fruits." Similarly, actions such as generosity and discipline that are not grasped by means also cannot cut off the root of samsara, just like cutting bamboo with a blunt axe. Meditating on the generation stage is like a child looking at a temple, and practicing the channels, winds, and bindus and the completion stage is like some animals burrowing underground when the season comes. Even heretics have mantras and good deeds that are not grasped by means. Look at those poor beings who have fallen into the preta realm because of practicing the generation stage! In particular, even if one abides in the bodhisattva lineage, one will be exposed to the rain of karma and affliction,
