Generated by love is for the sake of others, desiring perfect and complete enlightenment. Therefore, a person who possesses this mind of enlightenment is a Mahayana practitioner. Merely being separated from it means leaving the Mahayana. Because the main cause for realizing emptiness is abandoned, even if there are other qualities such as thinking that one has realized the profound meaning that is limited to mere nominal knowledge and the scope of foolish meditation, one falls into the Hinayana. Because limited love and compassion are also present in Hearers and Solitary Realizers, they do not have the courage to take upon themselves the burden of benefiting limitless sentient beings and eliminating suffering. As it is said in the Precious Garland: From the Hearer Vehicle, the vows and conduct of the Bodhisattva are explained, how does one become a Bodhisattva? Thus, even if the burden of liberating sentient beings is born, in the present situation, I cannot completely accomplish the benefit of even one sentient being. Therefore, even if one becomes a universal monarch or Brahma, one cannot. Therefore, even if one abides in the state of two Arhats, one can only liberate a few sentient beings from samsara, but cannot establish them in the state of omniscience. Therefore, for the temporary and ultimate benefit of limitless beings, generate the desire to attain the state of complete Buddhahood. As the teacher Aryadeva said: If oneself and this world, desire to attain the supreme enlightenment, its root is the mind of enlightenment, as stable as the king of mountains. Thus it is said. Now, in order to show the difference between the nature of the mind of enlightenment, aspiration and engagement. Among them, the mind that vows for the result is the aspiring mind of enlightenment, its objects of learning are self-other equality and exchange, and the three of cherishing others more than oneself, which are also the summary of the scriptures to be learned, and its nature truly abides in the four immeasurables such as love. The mind that vows for the cause is the engaging mind of enlightenment, its objects of learning are the six perfections, relying on the complete purity of conduct. As it is said in the Sutra Requested by Maitreya: Maitreya, for him who aspires for the benefit of others, is also great love, great compassion, and joy.

It is great and also of great equanimity. Correct practice is also the six perfections. And so on. Among them, aspiration is to aspire to attain enlightenment, to learn its precepts, and thus to vow to attain the result. Entering is to actually practice its Dharma, and thus to vow to attain the cause. As it is said in the Gandavyuha Sutra: 'Noble son, it is difficult for sentient beings to obtain the mind of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment.' Therefore, to actually enter the practice of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment is a Dharma that is difficult to obtain.' The meaning of this passage is explained by the teacher Shantideva with an analogy: 'The mind of enlightenment, in brief, should be known as twofold: the aspiration for enlightenment and the entering into enlightenment. Just as the difference between wanting to go and actually going is known, so should the wise gradually understand the difference between these two.' Just as a person who is determined to go somewhere begins to prepare to go, the thought that arises in my mind, after I become a Buddha, in order to benefit sentient beings, wanting to obtain profound and vast meaning, is aspiration. Correctly entering the practice of enlightenment is entering. Therefore, before taking vows, it is the mind of aspiration, and after taking vows, it is the mind of entering. If one does not strive to learn and practice, one will degenerate. As it is said in the Stages of Meditation by Glorious Yeshe Drakpa: 'Among them, first is the way of praying to the protector, truly explained. Second is entering into generosity and so on, explaining in detail the way of entering.' And so on. The commentary by Gewai Lha also says: 'From the perspective of the mind of enlightenment, the mind that aspires to enlightenment, that is, after I become a Buddha, in order to benefit sentient beings, to express this with faith, is wisdom. Wanting to obtain profound and vast meaning through actions and so on, this mind is the mind of aspiring to enlightenment. Correctly upholding the practice of enlightenment and so on, entering into it, is entering into enlightenment.' In this way, there are two types.' And also, in the Self-Commentary on the Connection by Shri Vibhutichandra, it is said: 'In short, there are two: aspiration and entering.' This is also the case for all the generations of...
