It is said in the Sutra that there are four things: generating the mind of enlightenment, upholding the sacred Dharma, cultivating compassion for sentient beings, and practicing the Dharma. If these are used as offerings, how can they be accomplished? Because there is no other way to please the Buddhas. The third is the limb of confessing sins: the karma of lying and the habit of sin, the image of fleeing to other places out of fear of virtue, all things hidden in the darkness of samsara, are purified and confessed by the burning sunlight of the four powers. Among them, there are six doors of sins to be purified: desire, hatred, and ignorance are the three motivations; body, speech, and mind are the three actors. But from the main point of view, the mouth is the door of sin, so it is said to be the karma of lying; the mind is poisonous and is the basis of all habits. The actors of both of these, such as name and form, and the sinful actions that arise dependently, whether done by oneself or caused to be done by others, and rejoicing in these actions, will block the path to heaven and liberation, and cause oneself to suffer in the three lower realms such as hell. If all these causes of suffering are not eradicated from the root by the ritual of the four powers, even if they are temporarily suppressed by weak virtuous actions and do not appear as if they have fled elsewhere, they will never diminish in the intermediate state until the fruit of that karma ripens, so it is said to be hidden in the darkness of samsara. As it is said in the Hundred Karmas: The karmas of sentient beings will not be lost even after hundreds of thousands of kalpas. When the field of accumulation and the time come, it will manifest as a result. Therefore, taking the objects of refuge, the Lama, the Khenpo Acharya, parents, etc. as examples, if the karma done and accumulated with a mind of affliction is not purified and exhausted, and is violently forced by the time of death and departs from this world, it is like a violent hail falling from a cloudless sky, and a great wind suddenly blowing from a silent earth, causing great harm. Those who do not know this, or even if they know it, despise the fact that karma and its results are not deceptive, will create various sins for the sake of loved ones and those who are not loved.

At the time of death, I too shall cease to exist, and they too shall cease to exist. However, the continuum of mind is uninterrupted, so the sins committed for their sake, the unbearable and unpleasant ripening of their consequences, cause suffering to oneself alone, and not to relatives, bedding, and so on. As the teacher Shantideva said: "For the sake of friends and enemies, I have committed various kinds of sins." And: "When seized by the messengers of Yama, what help are relatives? What help are friends? At that time, only merit is the sole refuge, but I have not relied on it." Thus, he exposed the faults of carelessness, admitted his heavy sins, wailed for help, ran around seeking refuge, but did not hide his sins. The meaning of this is as stated in the Vinayavibhaṅga: "Having done extremely evil deeds, self-reproach makes them thin." Therefore, we are all those who have fallen into the abyss of samsara, tormented by karma and afflictions, vessels of hundreds of thousands of faults and downfalls, solely under the control of karma and the ripening of karma. Therefore, we must constantly think of the means of liberation from it, day and night. As it was said before: "Suffering arises from non-virtue, how can one be liberated from it? Day and night, I should always think like this." Thus, it is shown that the means of liberation from suffering is to confess sins, and so on. How to confess? By the method of the four opponent powers. As it was said before: "With folded hands, with suffering and fear, repeatedly prostrate and confess. I beseech the guides to accept my sins and transgressions." Thus, having fear of having done non-virtuous deeds, with a sense of shame, placing oneself in great regret, is the power of aversion. Even if one is disturbed by afflictions, the afflictions are slightly reduced, or even if a situation of non-autonomy occurs, one should again practice a hundred times more virtuous deeds than that, is the power of reliance. As it is said: "This is not good, I will never do it again, never again." Thus, deeply regretting the non-virtuous deeds done in the past, taking vows again, never
