JL00 0010.Commentary on Chapter Eight of Engaging in the Bodhisattva's Deeds..g2.0f

Thus, the faithful supplicate and invite, the Buddha, with the wisdom of knowing, understands; with the uninterrupted compassion of love, beholds; all actions and deeds arise solely for the benefit of others, therefore, from the realm of Dharma, manifesting in a form body, the reason for coming is evident to those who see the truth of Dharma. Here, for a moment, to follow the example of King Duskyen, the ritual of invitation and bathing is performed. Whosoever, though being the protector and companion of all beings without exception, is also the enemy of the hordes of demons. O Bhagavan, who knows and sees in such a way, please come to my place. The place where the emanation not born of karma appears, is a layered bathing chamber filled with fragrance. It possesses a foundation and pillars of crystal and jewels. In that place where canopies of turquoise, coral, and pearls sway. For the excellent son endowed with the lineage of the Sugatas, from a jeweled vase filled with fragrant water, a beautiful maiden performs the ritual of bathing, striving to compete with the transformations of song and music. With eyes that are skilled in the ritual of close contact. The service of wiping and anointing is also beautiful. Arrows of the senses that do not remain in one color, purchasing heavenly objects that have not been woven. Pañcalī (Sanskrit transliteration, a kind of soft fabric) sold by the wish-fulfilling tree. Clothes that are pressed down by weight, abandoning thickness, light, soft, and supple. Immersed and anointed with fragrance and perfume, and precious jeweled ornaments whose value is shameful to mention. Bracelets, armlets, earrings, crowns, etc. Even the Muni who has abandoned the qualities of desire, accepts them for the sake of the merit of the greedy. The sons who are close attendants, such as Lokanatha, and the sixteen Bodhisattvas of the Bhadrakalpa, such as those who lead beings from the bad realms, and the appearance of householders. Dharma wise ones are always at Dū and Licchavī. Also, for the sake of a reputation without stain, I give alms. On a chariot of fragrance that pervades the trichiliocosm in an instant. With the sweet scent of sandalwood incense that entwines. The source of merit, the body endowed with auspicious marks. I anoint it to newly train and stabilize it. On the crystal ground of vast equanimity. On a thousand-petaled lotus of loving-kindness. In the radiance of the sun and moon of compassion. Please, Bhagavan of great bliss, together with your sons, reside here. Thus speaking, and displaying the demeanor of demonstrating the realization of faith.

Pa. Bowing the body without the habit of frivolity, with reverence in the heart, to display realization, the container of clasped hands tightly holding flowers, is to emulate the demeanor of a small bird. Naturally, in order to reveal the realization of the mind from the posture of the body, when I am before the Tathagata and his retinue, I think that it is not appropriate to act with a coquettish demeanor, a gloomy face, and a careless frivolity, so I restrain my body and mind, lower my gaze, and join my hands, holding flowers to my chest, abiding with a mind of reverence, fear, caution, shame, and embarrassment. As it is said in the Bodhicharyavatara: "Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, are always present without obstruction, I always abide in their presence, thinking thus. With this shame and fear, I always abide with reverence." Thus. The Sugata, endowed with knowledge and conduct, etc., all virtues increase like kalpas by abiding, when coming to the garden of faith, it is not sadness but goosebumps that arise. Thus, the posture of the body stimulates the nature of faith in the mind, the infinite merits of all the Buddhas mentioned before, such as being endowed with knowledge and conduct, The compassionate gaze is like surpassing the time in other Buddha-fields, holding one's breath just to invite us as guests of faith, and the body also generates a strong feeling of faith only by goosebumps. As it is said in the Sagarakirti-pariprccha-sutra: "Then Sagarakirti had goosebumps and took refuge in the Bhagavan." This is an example. Having generated faith in this way, one should offer the seven branches. The noble Asanga said: "A Bodhisattva who wishes to quickly realize enlightenment should perform prostrations, offerings, confession of sins, rejoicing, requesting to turn the wheel of Dharma, requesting not to enter Nirvana, and dedicating to enlightenment three times during the day and three times during the night." Thus, the supreme offering is the excellent seven branches of accumulating merit and purifying obscurations, of which the first branch is the branch of prostration, like a new moon entering a bathing pool.

Like a celestial maiden playfully frolicking, The countless forms of youthful dust, Busily engaged with hands that generate utter bewilderment. The meaning of prostrating to this is, the supreme of limbs, the head touching the ground. Joining the palms like a lotus bud just opening, then separating them again, is the general definition of prostration. As stated in the Great Liberation Sutra: Like a lotus bud just opening, joining the two hands in prayer at the crown of the head, with immeasurable clouds of bodies, I prostrate to the Buddhas of the ten directions. Thus it is. Among these, the initial posture of prostration is, like a tree lying on the ground, consciously stretching the entire body on the earth, this is called the prostration of Dipamkara (lit. Lamp-Bearer). If that is not accomplished, then the five-limbed prostration, with the head touching the ground, the other four limbs follow suit. Also, joining the palms at the crown of the head, throat, and heart, simultaneously visualizing the Guru, Dharma, and Sangha, then placing all five limbs on the ground three times, this is known as the ninefold prostration. Furthermore, when prostrating to a Lama or similar, first offer three prostrations of seeing, then offer three prostrations with offerings, and then state one's ailments three times, this is also referred to as the ninefold prostration. From the knees of the object of prostration, embracing with the hands, this is known as the knee-embracing prostration. The Acharyas touch the feet of the object of prostration, then touch their own crown of the head, in the same direction. Here, to the extent possible, one performs the full prostration, then performs the five-limbed prostration, and simultaneously visualizes bodies equal to the number of dust particles in a field, manifesting that many bodies to prostrate. Regarding the benefits, the Vinaya Sutra states: Bhikshus, the ripening of the merit from prostrating with faith to the stupa of the Tathagata's hair and nails is that, until anger arises towards those practicing celibacy, one will experience the bliss of a Chakravartin king equal to the number of dust particles up to the golden earth, and will be reborn among gods and humans. Thus it is. Even for those who aspire to the fruits of higher realms, the benefits are such. What then of the merit of prostrating for the sake of generating Bodhicitta? It is inconceivable, and ultimately one will attain the state of peace.
