Do not harm sentient beings, and do not associate with non-Buddhists. This is called the instruction arising from oral transmission. There are two aspects to it. First, the three instructions of negation are from the Sutra of Nirvana: "Whoever goes for refuge to the Buddha is a true lay practitioner. Never go for refuge to other gods. Going for refuge to the sacred Dharma means being free from the mind of harming and hurting. Going for refuge to the Sangha means not associating with non-Buddhists." As it is said. Having gone for refuge to the Buddha, one should not take refuge in worldly great gods such as powerful deities and Vishnu, let alone wandering pretas in the sky who have some magical powers and clairvoyance. If so, are the seventy-five protectors and so on not allowed to be Dharma protectors? If one does not trust the Three Jewels, or relies on them thinking they are superior, it is not allowed. However, there is no prohibition against relying on and making offerings to them temporarily as assistants to accomplish Dharma-related activities. For example, just as one does not take a doctor as a refuge, but expects him to cure diseases. Having gone for refuge to the Dharma, one should abandon the great harm to sentient beings, such as binding and beating sentient beings, putting them in cages, piercing their ears and cutting their wings, tormenting them with unbearable loads, and measuring the road length to ride them, etc., many of which are not recognized as sinful deeds due to ignorance. For example, taking birds and wild animals as objects of play and novelty, and deliberately keeping them as possessions is a category of being confined in cages. One can know how much suffering and harm they receive from being prevented from wandering freely by estimating it oneself. Having gone for refuge to the Sangha, one should not be close to those who do not trust and slander the Three Jewels, and should not even incline one's mind to those who do not respect the Three Jewels. Secondly, the three instructions for accomplishing favorable conditions are: For the images of the Buddhas, whether painted or sculpted, whatever the form, do not appraise them, do not place them in places where service is neglected, do not use them as collateral, etc. All contemptuous actions should be abandoned. From the Lotus Sutra, the body manifests in many forms there.
