The basis for all vows is as follows: The Seventy Verses on Refuge states, "All vows have a refuge, but there is none for those who have not taken refuge." Because refuge is established as the basis of merit, those who have entered a philosophical system must have a refuge that can serve as the basis for vows. As it says earlier, "The three refuges of a layperson are the root of the eight vows." This is because refuge makes the thought of nirvana firm, and vows arise from that. The commentary on the Treasury also says, "Those who take refuge are the gateway to perfectly taking all vows." Furthermore, by taking refuge in the Three Jewels, the obscurations of karma and sins accumulated in the past will be lessened or exhausted. As the Essence of the Sun Sutra says, "Whoever among sentient beings takes refuge in the Buddha, millions of demons cannot harm them. Even if their discipline is broken and their mind is confused, they will surely cross to the other shore of existence." Furthermore, one is also liberated from harm and near death. The Noble Banner Sutra states, "Monks, whether you dwell in monasteries, charnel grounds, or empty wildernesses, if you take refuge in the Three Jewels, fear, suffering, and hair-raising phenomena will disappear." Regarding these points, even foolish people tell convincing stories. Once, a thief was beaten three times by a jailer with a whip, and each time the jailer signaled and shouted, "I take refuge in the Buddha! I take refuge in the Dharma! I take refuge in the Sangha!" Because the pain was unbearable, he hid under a bridge. As he mentally cultivated the refuge verses, merging them with the pain, he suddenly saw many non-humans coming noisily from the other side of the bridge, saying, "There is someone here taking refuge in the Three Jewels!" and then they fled. Thus, even for those with completely afflicted conceptual thoughts, the inconceivable nature of the Three Jewels does not deceive them. How much more so for those who are bound by afflictions and fetters, who wander in samsara, who view the destructible aggregates as real, and who are one-sidedly

If one falls into the path of the inferior vehicle, and is afflicted by unfavorable circumstances such as samsara and the evil destinies, one can be rescued from all these difficulties in this very life. Moreover, whoever would not rely on this refuge, which has great power to easily accomplish all the benefits of higher realms and definite goodness? As it is said in the Ornament of the Sutras: "Always from the hosts of afflictions, and all misdeeds, and also from aging and death, the Buddha himself completely protects. All harms and evil destinies and non-places, and destructible inferior vehicles, for the sake of protecting, he is the supreme refuge." So it is. Purifying the cause of being born in the evil destinies is also stated in the Compendium of Trainings: "Here, the story of the pig's realization is taken as an example." The meaning of what is said is that the son of a god who was about to be born as a pig, because he took refuge, was not born as a pig, as mentioned earlier. Not being separated from the Three Jewels is obtained from remembering them. As it is said in the Collection of Mindfulness: "Whoever, during the days and nights, remembers the Buddha, and whoever has gone for refuge to the Buddha, those are the treasures of humans." As it is said, applying this to the other two as well, as stated in the Sutra of the Moon Lamp and the Holy Jewel Heap Sutra, the remembrance of the three is clearly explained with words. Thinking, "I have found a good refuge by relying on these three refuges!" and cultivating joy, followed by dedicating the merit, one can exhaust sins and increase virtues, thereby obtaining the fruit of not being separated from the Three Jewels in all lifetimes. The appearance of excellence and perfection in this very life means that any world where the qualities of the Three Jewels have not been heard is a great blind spot abandoned by the guide. Here, by relying on the immeasurable qualities of refuge, all the excellence and perfection of existence and peace will appear in this very life for those who follow the noble qualities. As it is said in the Jewel Heap Sutra: "The wise follow qualities, by that power, the meaning of perfection is also accomplished." Therefore, whatever Dharma-abiding activity one undertakes, one should first venerate and take refuge in the Three Jewels alone, and then pray for the wish to be fulfilled as desired, so that it can be easily...
