Explanation of the Sixth Chapter: The Collection of Taking Refuge. Explanation of the Sixth Chapter: The Collection of Taking Refuge. Thus, a person who possesses the four retinues should first learn the method of taking refuge, which is the basis of all vows and the sacred gateway to entering the teachings, when entering the path of the Great Vehicle. Amidst the turbulent ocean of three fears, the white parasol of the fame of the Three Jewels, in whom one trusts as a worthy refuge and upon whom one relies for life, is held as the very beginning of entering the teachings. There are three fears: generally, fear of the suffering of samsara; particularly, fear of self-interest; and especially, fear of ordinary delusion. Thus, those who are certain to fall into samsara, which is like an ocean stirred by waves, the abode of cruel aquatic monsters, develop the mind of seeking only refuge. As the logician Dignāga said: "The beginningless and endless samsara exists in the ocean. The body is eaten by unbearable aquatic monsters such as desire. To whom shall I go for refuge today?" Therefore, the object of refuge worthy of trust is only the Three Jewels, and not other powerful beings such as Īśvara and the like. Why? Because they themselves have not been liberated from the fears of samsara and the lower realms, they are also unable to protect others. Moreover, they do not possess skill in methods for taming disciples, nor do they possess great compassion without self-interest. Therefore, the teacher, the noble accomplished one, praised the Buddha after seeing his qualities: "I have abandoned other teachers, and I go to you for refuge. Why? Because you have no faults and are perfect in qualities." And so on. The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, have attained a state free from fear because they have abandoned all that is to be abandoned. They have realized all that is to be realized and perfected all qualities, so they possess both the ability and the skill to protect others from fear. They also possess great compassion without partiality, so they are worthy of refuge. As it is said in the "Hundred and Fifty Praises": "In whom, in whom, all faults are completely and forever absent; in whom, in all aspects, all qualities abide."
