May the Three Jewels never be separated. May we come to the Dharma that sees perfect abundance. May we accomplish the two bodies of form through the completion of merit and accumulation. Just as the nature of space cannot be represented by above and below, or by directions and parts, similarly, the results of good and bad actions based on the Three Jewels are inconceivable. This has been repeatedly mentioned both directly and indirectly. As it is said in the scriptures: Just as the sky has no end, and cannot be measured by cubits, so too, the extent of the virtues and sins that depend on the Three Jewels cannot be estimated. In particular, the benefits of taking refuge are mentioned in the Sutra of Immaculate Purity: "Whatever merit comes from taking refuge, if it had a form, and filled all of space, it would be even greater than that." And in the Condensed Perfection of Wisdom Sutra: "If the merit of taking refuge had a form, even the three realms would be too small to contain it. The great ocean, a treasury of water, cannot be measured by a container." And in the Sutra Requested by the Boy Ratnadatta: "Those who have taken refuge in the Buddha, all their virtuous qualities increase. They have a sense of shame. They have a sense of embarrassment. Those who have taken refuge in the Dharma are mindful. They have many qualities. They always remember their past lives. They possess a share of the Dharma. Those who have taken refuge in the Sangha, their minds are workable. They have many doors to samadhi and dharani. They are always of noble birth. Even in dreams, they are inseparable from the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. Furthermore, they are protected by the gods who delight in white (virtuous) deeds. They also increase their roots of virtue." So it is said. Therefore, to be included in the Buddhist fold means that, although the ways of establishing inner and outer are not absolute, it is said that some Indians, such as Shantipa, distinguish through taking refuge. First, one enters the Buddhist community, and from the moment of receiving refuge, one sincerely regards the Three Jewels as the objects of refuge, such as the teacher, and it is necessary not to abandon that which has been obtained. Without that, even if one performs virtuous deeds that are in accordance with merit, one is not included as a Buddhist.
