Because I am precious, because I am immaculate, because I am powerful, and the ornament of the world, because I am the only one, because I am supreme, because I am immutable, therefore I am the Jewel. (Thus it is said.) That is to say, the path to liberation from suffering, and the ultimate essence of saving from the suffering of samsara, is only the Dharma Jewel. From the perspective of repaying kindness, the teacher of the Buddha is the Dharma, because the Buddha is born from the Dharma, so the Dharma is the mother of the Buddha, and the Buddha abides in the Dharma. Thus it is said. In the Collection of Righteous Dharma, it is said: Those Buddhas, the Bhagavat, have infinite and boundless qualities. They are born from the Dharma, enjoy the share of the Dharma, are manifested by the Dharma, have the Dharma as their master, arise from the Dharma, have the Dharma as their sphere of activity, rely on the Dharma, and are accomplished by the Dharma. Thus it is said. Therefore, the truth of cessation and the path, having the nature of abandoning faults and accomplishing qualities, when it manifests in the continuum of the refuge taker, all the qualities of the Buddha arise. Moreover, the Dharma itself does not arise from causes other than the nature of the teacher Buddha, therefore the two are like mutually dependent pillars. In the Sutra of Repaying Kindness, it is said: Someone asked: The teacher of the Buddha is the Dharma, why is the Dharma not mentioned first among the Three Jewels? The Buddha replied: Although the teacher of the Buddha is the Dharma, the Dharma is not taught by others who are not Buddhas, just as the path also needs people to practice, therefore the Buddha is mentioned first. Thus it is said. Therefore, in order to establish the relationship of "this arising from that," if one knowingly reverses the order of the names, there will be fault, unless it is those who do not know. Following the qualities of both is the Sangha, although a term is established for the companion of practicing the path, in reality one should know that it is the basis of the three trainings, therefore one needs to take refuge. Thus it is said. In the Seventy Verses on Refuge, it is said: The Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha are the refuge for those who desire liberation. Thus it is said. Here, although there is no contradiction to the treatises of the Great and Small Vehicles, and there is no deviation from the undifferentiated path, people are often accustomed to the nature of the five obscurations such as wrong views and doubts, therefore it is necessary to understand the definition and object of refuge.

Furthermore, regarding the differences in thoughts and being unconfused about their causes and effects, possessing meaningful connections with examples, even if the methods for correcting the mind are not explained, it should be taught that understanding through scriptural authority is like the Lesser Vehicle. In the Sutra of Repaying Kindness, it says: Taking refuge means protection or assistance. For example, if someone commits a great crime and flees to another country, seeking refuge from the king of that country, the king of the other country would advise him, saying, 'If you wish to be unafraid, do not leave my country, and if you listen to my teachings, I will provide refuge.' Similarly, ordinary people are the same; being under the control of demons and having the faults of birth and death, they should turn to the Three Jewels and seek refuge. If one single-mindedly turns to the Three Jewels and does not violate the Buddha's teachings, then the sinful king of demons will have no means. Previously, when a pigeon, out of fear, went under the shadow of Shariputra, it still felt fear and trembled. Then, when it went under the shadow of the Buddha, there was no fear, and it did not tremble. Therefore, the Buddha possesses great love and great compassion, while Shariputra does not have great love and great compassion. The Buddha has no habitual tendencies, while Shariputra's habitual tendencies are not exhausted. The Buddha practiced the conduct of a Bodhisattva for three countless eons. Shariputra—when compared to the Buddha, Shariputra's love and compassion are slightly less, and a negative word is used here, but it should also be understood that this does not mean that Shariputra has no love and compassion. He practiced asceticism for sixty eons. Therefore, when the pigeon went under the shadow of Shariputra, it still felt fear and dread, but when it went under the shadow of the Buddha, it became fearless. Question: If taking refuge in the Three Jewels purifies sins and non-virtue and one does not feel fear, then why did someone like Devadatta also seek refuge in the Three Jewels, ordain out of faith, and perfect his discipline, yet commit three acts of immediate retribution, ultimately falling into the Avici hell?
