I mainly pursue fame, while explaining profound and vast doctrines to others, I myself am busy with trade, agriculture, harming the lives of sentient beings, or merely craving worldly riches, and wrongly entering the ways of royalty and household life, this is like a wooden self-grinding mill that confuses sound and meaning. Although it does not contradict the nature of ordinary people, the faith of fools places hope in what should not be placed. Those who are filled with gain and respectful offerings, like the hand-operated waterwheel in a well, are completely contrary to the ordinary nature of the noble ones. How do they contradict? That is, they possess faith, discipline, the habit of giving, extensive learning and thinking, shame, knowing shame, wisdom, are rich with the wealth of their own lineage, and are free from miserliness and other afflictions, defilements, and all views, therefore they are called noble ones. The characteristics of childish ordinary people are, the learned teacher Matijitra said: 'Do not let foolish and poor people, greedy and misbehaving people, flattering, violent, and disgusting people, live in your country. Always understand the differences of ordinary people, those who follow only for their own benefit are worse than other ordinary people.' The Suhrllekha says: 'The reason for this is that beings love miserliness, the Buddha said that miserliness is not a noble quality.' Therefore, a non-noble person refers to the nature of self-continuum filled with afflictions, like ignorance. Relying on the slight fruit of past generosity, those who now obtain the position of a lama, are fabricated by the biased faith of fools as noble ones or compassionate incarnations, gain and respect make their self-continuum degenerate, so that they do not allow self-continuum to observe and discern, and arrogantly think that everything is just like that. Their state is like the frog in the well mentioned in the Jataka-tila. They have little learning, their vows and commitments are broken, their self-continuum is inferior, but their behavior is high above. The rope of loving-kindness and compassion is broken, and the mad guides only increase sin. Because they only hear a part, they do not possess the qualities of scriptural authority, because they do not know what should and should not be done, they often violate vows and commitments.

Practice. If one does not possess the wisdom that realizes Suchness, then one is merely imitating the practice of engaging in the complete accumulation of abandonment and realization. Those who have dried up the stream of love and compassion and follow after gain and honor for the sake of others, it is like entrusting a madman to a guide, who will lead them to the non-path as if it were the ordinary path, leading them from a cliff that seems like Dharma into the abyss of sinful views. Especially, if one is not superior in qualities to oneself, devoid of the mind of enlightenment, and teaches only through the power of fame, it is like a blind leader making a great mistake, wandering in the darkness of deceptive companionship. Therefore, if one does not thoroughly examine the holy person, the virtuous accumulations of the faithful will be wasted, and the opportunity of leisure and fortune, obtained once, will be deceived like a venomous snake and mistaking the shadow of a tree. Just as a blind person leading a blind person is not a possible thing even in the world. Therefore, whatever the disciple may be, the qualities of distinction far exceeding the disciple are absolutely necessary. As it says in the Collection of Friends: 'By attending to an inferior, one's virtues will decline; by attending to an equal, one will remain the same; by attending to a superior, one will attain holiness; therefore, one should attend to a superior.' Likewise, if the disciple is on the Path of Accumulation, then the guru must be abiding on the Path of Preparation. Similarly, for a disciple on the Path of Preparation, the guru must be on the Path of Seeing; to lead a disciple on the Path of Seeing, the guru must be abiding on the Path of Meditation; for a disciple on the Path of Meditation, the guru must be one who has attained the state of omniscience. If so, one might think that it is unrelated to the statement in the Sutras and Tantras that one must regard the guru as a Buddha. Here, initially, if the relationship between guru and disciple is established without distinguishing greatness in terms of qualities, then after testing, it is not suitable as an object of devotion, and because of deceptive companionship, blessings will not enter, so examine in this way. From the perspective of offering devotion and making supplications, it is not to regard them as individuals abiding on the path. In particular, the precious mind of enlightenment is the treasury of all qualities, the supreme field of faith. If one is separated from it and, deluded by mere appearances of fame, attends to someone, then one does not observe whether the disciple acts according to the Dharma, but only looks at whether one receives service and honor, and uses this to distinguish between high and low.
