Rich in the fruit of immaculate wisdom, the flowers of the four means of gathering are extremely brilliant, relying on attracting fortunate student bees, the teachings of the fruit of life in the past kalpa, etc., make the kalpa especially virtuous. The continuums of those to be tamed are also inherently virtuous and endowed with merit, so many great accomplished ones who have attained accomplishment through the path of mantra have emerged, so the virtuous friend also possesses all the qualities as described in the profound sutras and tantras. Now, in the degenerate age, there are few individuals who have perfected the qualities of a holy person, and even if there are, most of them live in concealment. Beings are connected with the other power of ignorance and only follow fame, so the five degenerations of their own continuums hinder them from meeting a noble virtuous friend. If one is overcome by such obstacles, then from the stage of an ordinary person to the stage of a Buddha, one must rely on a lama who is a guide on the path. Therefore, if one does not carefully examine the qualities before making a Dharma connection, even if the disciple himself is endowed with good fortune, if he encounters a bad lama who is deceived by false appearances, he will not be allowed to go to other noble individuals. No matter how long he stays with him, he will not develop a single quality. For example, if you make offerings to a wish-fulfilling jewel and pray, your wishes will be fulfilled, but if you pray to a pebble, it will not be so. In this way, in the world, one must carefully examine the teacher who marries a bride or learns a craft. The eight freedoms and five endowments arise from one's own causes, but abandoning the limbs of higher rebirth and also considering the precious human body as ordinary, is not a noble virtuous friend, so he cannot be a guide to omniscience. How should one examine the qualities here? That is, in the three vows of individual liberation, Bodhisattva, and Vidyadhara, one knows the respective tenets and practices them without error. He is proficient in the rituals of the four pitakas of Vinaya, Sutra, Abhidhamma, and Vidyadhara, and is liberated from the continuum by hearing. Especially

Moreover, possessing the extraordinary qualities of great compassion and the union of emptiness, having in their hearts the four means of gathering disciples—giving, kind speech, beneficial action, and consistency—to accomplish the benefit of sentient beings, this is the same as the actions of the Buddha, therefore it is an emanation body. As it says in the Drum Sounds Sutra: "Do not grieve, Ananda! Do not weep, Ananda! In the future, I will emanate as a virtuous friend, to accomplish the benefit of you and others." It is also like that. In this way, when the Buddha tames beings, he appears as the actual Buddha with a crown protuberance to accomplish their benefit. When he appears as a pandita abiding in the fruits of an arhat, a non-returner, a once-returner, or a stream-enterer to accomplish their benefit, know that he emanates in those forms to compile the scriptures and compose treatises. Nowadays, in the degenerate age of the teachings, in order to show the path to liberation and omniscience, he emanates as a virtuous friend to accomplish their benefit, therefore, from the aspect of essence, he is the same as the Buddha, and from the aspect of form, he strives to benefit those extremely afflicted sentient beings who have been abandoned by the actual Buddha, therefore, in my view, from the aspect of compassion, he is even more excellent than the Buddha himself. As it says in the Guhyasamaja Tantra: "Because the elements and activities, are equal in self and other, the guru is equal to all the Buddhas. For the sake of showing the path to whatever being, he is more excellent than the Buddhas." In particular, the guru of secret mantra, especially the guru who teaches the oral instructions: having received empowerment, abiding in vows, being extremely peaceful, understanding the meaning of the tantras of the ground, path, and fruition, liberating one's own mind-stream through the completion of signs of recitation and practice, possessing immeasurable compassion, solely striving to accomplish the benefit of others, having few activities, being diligent in the Dharma, possessing great renunciation, and also encouraging others to act in this way, being skillful in means, possessing the blessings of the lineage. Relying on such a person, one can quickly attain accomplishment. The meaning of this is the view of the great scholar Vimalamitra, as it says in the commentary on the Mirror of Illusion: the guru also needs to have fully received the empowerments of the inner and outer mandalas, to have pure vows and commitments, to be proficient in the meaning of the various tantras, and to be proficient in the meaning of recitation, practice, activities, and their related meanings.

Furthermore, it possesses eight qualities: realization unconfused by views, familiarity with experiential meditation, association with various conducts, and guiding beings to be tamed with compassion. Thus it is said. On top of that, an unbroken lineage with great blessings, strong renunciation, and few activities are the unique tradition of my omniscient guru. If the lineage is broken, blessings will not arise because the accomplishment of mantra relies solely on vows. If one does not diligently practice Dharma, even if one says, "The Dharma says this," one still acts according to one's own ideas. In particular, one engages in the eight worldly concerns without needing to be taught. Therefore, the guru himself should also act according to the Dharma. Furthermore, one who is associated with that is called a virtuous friend. As it is said in the Sutra of Nirvana, "One diligently engages in enlightenment oneself and also leads others to diligently engage in enlightenment; therefore, one is called a virtuous friend." Therefore, having few activities as a sign of one's own liberation through realization, and being endowed with great compassion without weariness in benefiting others, should be regarded as the sign of a great person. Lord Maitreya said, "A Bodhisattva who is learned and sees the truth, speaks well and is loving, an unwearied noble person, should be known as a great one." Thus it is. In order to explain the characteristics of those who should not be relied upon: Like a Brahmin guarding his caste, or in a pond fearing the decline of his dwelling, using the fruits of hearing and thinking for bathing in an improper place. A guide like a wooden self-grinder. Like this, a Brahmin regards only his own caste as supreme, and Vedas and evil mantras are not necessary for attaining Buddhahood, and like holding onto ancestral traditions unrelated to the Buddha's teachings, he is filled only with caste, lineage, and lineage, and delights in exalting himself and belittling others, and like regarding worldly realizations as the characteristics of the true Dharma, he is filled with the arrogance of distraction and turmoil, and does not trust in the wisdom of hearing, thinking, and meditation, or because he fears the decline of the property and territory of his dwelling, even if he hears and thinks a little, he uses its fruits for worldly
