Therefore, during the period when the teachings are not completed due to the actions of deluding the world without any ideas or necessities, the student gains some free time and is able to hear the accumulation of goodness. Previously, there was an unexamined person who, at night, confused a poisonous snake with the shadow of a tree and rested on it, as if being swallowed by a snake. Therefore, the fault of relying on non-saints is like sharing Kusha grass with rotten fish. In the Vinaya Sutra, it says: In front of a person, Kusha grass, if it is entwined with rotten fish, before long, the Kusha grass itself will become the same. Therefore, relying on non-saints is also the same. Also, in the Treatise on the Holders of Knowledge, it says: Teaching others what one does not know oneself, wanting to mature others when one's own mindstream is not mature, not understanding the meaning of tantras and oral instructions, foolish words full of arrogance, selling secret mantras and profound Bon teachings, relying on support to do Buddhist activities, accumulating sins, having little learning and being unable to answer questions, an unexamined teacher is the demon of the students. Such a person will obtain immeasurable sins of deceiving sentient beings. In the Fierce Vajra Tantra, it says: The lion of speech, a descendant of those who are skilled in the meaning of the guru, pretending to be knowledgeable when he is not, occupying the position of the guru to work hard, will surely fall into the arrogant Great Rudra. In the past, there was a monk named Immaculate Conduct who only pretended to be a yogi. Since there were no gurus living who were skilled in the meaning, the hundred thousand retinues of those gurus requested: Please be the successor of our guru. Therefore, that monk named Immaculate Conduct developed great arrogance, pretending to be something he did not understand, and therefore, at that time, together with the hundred thousand monk retinues, he was reborn as Rudra for countless great kalpas. And so on, it is widely proclaimed. Therefore, abandoning mistakes and relying on a true saint is gaining a great benefit. The guru who possesses all qualities is the essence of the wisdom and compassion of all Buddhas, descending in the form of a person for the sake of taming beings, is the supreme root of accomplishing all siddhis, and is widely learned.

Possessing the essence of excellent qualities, and with unsurpassed wisdom of realization, skilled in liberating the minds of disciples, that is the embodiment of all Buddhas. As stated in the Sutra of Immaculate Space: "Ananda, the Tathagatas do not appear to all sentient beings, but the virtuous friend appears to all, teaching the Dharma and planting the seeds of liberation. Therefore, the virtuous friend is even more excellent than the Tathagatas." Also, as stated in the Tantra: "The Buddhas and their sons, to those who are to be tamed, show forms that are in accordance with them." Furthermore, as stated in the General Sutra, all accomplishments depend solely on the Lama: "Without relying on the teachers, Buddhas will never arise. I have never seen them arise, and if they did, it would contradict the holy teachings." So it is. The actions and conduct are also like this: in terms of provisional meaning, they are in harmony with all; in terms of definitive meaning, they contradict all. Those with realization are superior to all, skilled in cutting doubts, and able to endure the weariness of wrong practices. As it is said in the Arrangement of the Tree: "What is a virtuous friend? It is one who, in order to guide all beings, is seen as not being in disagreement. It is one who, because of transcending the world, is not in common with all. It is one who, because of diligently working in all ways, accomplishes immeasurable benefits." So it is. The praise that matches the example and meaning is: A great boat that ferries across the ocean of existence, A true captain who does not err on the supreme path, A rain of nectar that destroys the fire of karma and afflictions, Like the sun and moon that dispel the darkness of ignorance. The vehicle is very large, like the earth, The source of benefit and happiness, like a wish-fulfilling tree, Possessing a treasure of Dharma, like a good vase, More excellent than a wish-fulfilling jewel that produces everything. Loving all equally, like parents, Great and swift compassion, like a river, Unchanging joy, like a mountain king, Undisturbed equanimity, like rain clouds. Such a Lama is equal to all Buddhas. Even if harm is done, if it is connected to the path of happiness, Then for the person who relies on them with unfeigned faith, The qualities of higher realms and definite goodness will fall like rain. The meaning of this is also as previously stated: 'Hey! Son of lineage, also, samsara'

Like a great ship to deliver from the ocean of suffering. Like a guide for those who have entered the path of liberation. Like the king of wish-fulfilling jewels that dispels the decay of existence. Like a river that extinguishes the fire of karma and afflictions. Like a good cloud that pours down great rain of Dharma. Like a great drum of the gods that makes beings rejoice greatly. Like the king of medicine who cures the disease of afflictions. Like a lamp that dispels all the darkness of ignorance. Like a wish-fulfilling tree that fulfills all desires. Like a good vase that accomplishes all that is thought of. Like the orb of the sun with immeasurable love. Like the orb of the moon that dispels the suffering of afflictions. Like the son of Vaishravana who bestows the wealth of qualities. Thus it is said. In short, even if harm is done to a holy being whose mindstream is completely purified by the four immeasurable qualities, the source of the great conduct of a Bodhisattva, they abandon anger and follow love, seeing the characteristics of sentient beings. If one connects to the path of happiness by taking faith as a close friend, then for a disciple who relies on them from the bottom of their heart, there is no need to mention that the virtues of temporary higher birth and ultimate definite goodness will fall like rain. As it is said in the Bodhicharyavatara: "To whomever harm is done, yet connects to happiness, to that source of happiness, I prostrate." This is praise. The way to rely on each other by generating the perception of being interdependent is: Just as a patient relies on a doctor, a traveler relies on a guide, a fearful person relies on the sky, a merchant relies on a captain, and a boatman relies on a helmsman, so should one rely on them out of fear of birth, old age, death, and the enemy of afflictions. As it is said in the Arrangement of Trees Sutra: "Son of good family, you should generate the perception of yourself as a patient. Generate the perception of Dharma as medicine. Generate the perception of diligent practice as living close to healing. Generate the perception of a virtuous friend as a skilled doctor." And again: "Son of good family, you should generate the perception of yourself as a traveler. Generate the perception of Dharma as giving fearlessness. Generate the perception of diligent practice as liberation from all fears."
