Therefore, as it is said, "Gained by wisdom, the mind is content, and will not be harmed by the faults of improper livelihood." Not being conquered by the thought of gain, having a sense of shame, being conscientious, and not maintaining livelihood through flattery and subservience, but rather obtaining it through proper means, this is what is called wisdom, and it is extensively explained in the Sutra of Pure Livelihood. As the Bhagavan said, "Even seeing the faults of greed, one will feel that being far from the mind of greed is good, and one will not feel sorrow about it." As it is said. Similarly, in the sutra it says, "Giving meat and alcohol, giving poison and weapons." It extensively explains the faults of giving in improper places, what need is there to mention the enjoyers? In the Lankavatara Sutra, it says, "Great Wisdom, my noble Shravaka disciples do not even eat ordinary food, what need is there to mention the impermissible food of meat and blood? Great Wisdom, I have the perception of all sentient beings as if they were my only child, how could I allow the Shravakas to eat the flesh of my child? What need is there to mention eating it myself? My allowing the Shravakas to eat, and myself eating, this is non-existent for Great Wisdom." And it says, "For the sake of profit, they kill sentient beings; for the sake of meat, they give wealth. Both of these are sinful, and will be imprisoned in places of screaming and so on." And it says, "In the Nirvana Sutra, the Angulimala Sutra, and the Lankavatara Sutra, I have also completely condemned meat." And it says, "In the future, foolish meat-eaters will say, 'Meat is without sin, it is permissible to eat, the Buddhas have said so.'" This clearly shows the meaning of the special prohibition in the Mahayana scriptures, that even meat that can be cited through the three purities should be abandoned because it is doubtful, and this is the only thing that should be pursued. In that same sutra it says, "The three pure meats are those that are unexamined, unrequested, and unprompted, and are completely non-existent, therefore, meat should not be eaten." Therefore, claiming to be a Mahayana practitioner, but only pursuing the consumption of meat and alcohol, is a different custom, and not that of our compassionate teacher...

Those who follow these take only the saving of sentient beings' lives as their task, and they should also remember the faults of intoxicating drinks as taught in the Jataka of the Hundredfold Vase. Now, in order to extensively explain the method of relying on holy individuals, in order to perfect the qualities of all trainings, one should rely on holy individuals. Just as in the forests of Malaya, even an ordinary tree stump that wanders about, like the fragrant scent of sandalwood with moist branches, follows whoever it relies on. One should examine in this way, not confusing good and evil, Dharma and the characteristics of what is disguised as Dharma, and knowing without error the places of training from refuge to liberation, this comes from relying on a virtuous spiritual friend. Just as in the great medicinal forest of the Himalayas, an ordinary tree stump wanders about, but after a while, the fragrance of sandalwood permeates it, so that it creates the illusion of being sandalwood. Similarly, childish, individual sentient beings, like trees covered with thorns of affliction, with untamed and fierce branches that are unsightly like burls, with inverted acceptance and rejection, stingy towards generosity, craving for existence, fallen from the asceticism of patience, claiming the wrong path as the path, claiming the non-fruit as the fruit, like cattle lacking the fragrance of morality and the qualities of samadhi, these beings also enter the path of the holy person by relying on him, just as the Brahmin's son, Ahiṃsaka (non-harming), with a garland of fingers, after killing nine hundred and ninety-nine people, wanted to kill his own mother, and even intended to harm the Tathagata, hearing the Teacher's excellent Dharma and following it, saw the truth. As it is said in the Vinaya Sutra: Like vines entwining the Sala tree, those who rely on the holy ones will be embraced by the splendor of goodness. The characteristics of one to be relied upon are: perfecting all aspects of the holy Dharma, although difficult to find due to the power of the degenerate age, on the pure ground of the three vows' permissions and prohibitions, moistening the mindstream with wisdom and great compassion, being skilled in the rituals of the ocean of Sutras and Tantras, abandoning...
