If we, such as those of noble lineage, are born into such a great lineage, why should we go from house to house begging for food? Those who do not beg out of shame should emulate the body of the Thus-Gone One, which is endowed with merit and splendor, and go begging. Thus it is said. Similarly, other sentient beings should accept alms with the thought of generating roots of virtue, and also the manner of learning to be mindful in conduct. As it says in the Sagaramati Sutra: O Light-Protected One, one should seek alms thinking of all sentient beings. Seek food when there is no food. In order to dispel others' clinging to pills, you should go for alms. Having blessed the empty village, you should go to the village. Thus it is said. In the Holy Jewel Cloud Sutra, it says: Son of lineage, when a Bodhisattva sees suffering beings with small roots of virtue and possessing small roots of virtue, in order to benefit those sentient beings, he takes the vow to receive alms. When he goes for alms to a village, town, or the vicinity of a village, he should establish mindfulness very closely, and with beautiful conduct, not moving the senses, not being rough with the senses, subduing the senses, looking as far as the yoke, and establishing mindfulness on virtuous dharmas, he goes for alms. If he goes for alms, he gradually takes alms, not entering villages of Brahmins who boast of nobility and are as tall as Sala trees, or villages of kings as tall as Sala trees, or villages of householders as tall as Sala trees, or wealthy villages, but starting from one side, he practices begging until that purpose is accomplished. Thus and so on. In order to avoid disparaging householders, it is said not to go to places where dogs are eaten, etc. Moreover, regarding the rule that alms should not exceed one-fourth, it is said like this: From that alms, one part is set aside for those who practice celibacy. The second part is set aside for those who are suffering. The third part is set aside for sentient beings who have fallen into wrongdoing. The fourth part is

From "I eat," it is explained in detail until eating appropriately. Similarly, just as the Supreme Pair vowed not to eat food without benefiting sentient beings in the three lower realms in whatever way possible, we should also perform the action of Surupa or sprinkling water before eating. When eating, bless it as nectar with Om Ah Hum. From the first of the four portions, offer to the Lama with "Guru Vajra Nividya Ah Hum." Offer to the Three Jewels with "Ratna Vajra Naividya Ah Hum." Offer to the Yidam with "Deva Dakini Naividya." The second portion is for the general Dharma protectors. Offer with "Dharma Pala Sarva Vajra Naividya Ah Hum." Then, give one portion of food to the demoness, reciting "Om Hariti Pinda Akham Svaha." Give one portion of food to her five hundred sons, reciting "Om Hariti Pinda Nikham Svaha." Give one portion of food to the spirits who have power over the essence, reciting "Om Agra Pandi Asyi Bhya Svaha." Then, if one is accustomed to food yoga, enjoy the third portion accordingly. If not, enjoy it with the intention of sustaining the body for the sake of practicing Dharma and benefiting others, and with the thought that the worms in the body are now sustained by food and will ultimately be sustained by Dharma. From the remaining fourth portion, give one portion of food to the spirits who have power over the leftovers, reciting "Om Ucchista Pindi Asha Bhya Svaha," and give the rest to impoverished sentient beings. Then, rinse the mouth and recite the Dharani of complete purification: "Namas Manta Prabha Rajaya Tathagataya Arhate Samyaksambuddhaya Namo Manjushriye Kumarabhutaya Bodhisattvaya Mahasattvaya Mahakarunikaya Tadyatha Om Nira Lambhe Nira Bhase Jaya Jaya Labdhe Labdhe Mahamate Dakshi Dakshini Parishodhaya Svaha." Recite this aspiration from the Sutra of Meeting Father and Son: May all those who give me water to drink, and those who serve, respect, honor, and make offerings to me, attain the bliss of peace! May those who scold me, and those who give me food, attain the bliss of peace! And those who cause displeasure, beat, stab with weapons, and even kill in all ways.
