In a joyful, secluded place. A forest with little labor, happiness, and ease, Without engaging in any distractions, May I dwell alone. It is said, and will be elaborated below. Even a cat with a very stubborn mind, Walks calmly and behaves steadily, In a place where one comfortably associates with sinful friends, Even if prosperous, one quickly falls away from the Dharma. Like a cat, whose mind is extremely unruly, Very capable, Possessing only harmful nature, Yet skilled in walking and dwelling, With gentle and definite behavior, Likewise, wherever beings are with unruly minds, Viewing cause and effect perversely, Not trusting in the Three Jewels, Relying solely on sin, Merely aiming to temporarily avert calamities, And respectfully regarding the Dharma and individuals, The land possessed by those who, In serving and honoring, are not seized by skillful means and compassion, Even if initially used and befriended by me, Those who delight in gambling and the like, Gather in unrestrained celebrations, Dislike virtue solely through laziness, Possess the enjoyment of wine, a vessel of many faults, Wander from one house to another at night, Delight only in non-virtue, are sinful friends, Therefore, even from the attire of their faction, one will fall away from the Dharma. As it is said in the Letter to a Friend: Gambling and watching gatherings, Laziness, relying on sinful friends, Drinking and wandering at night are the causes of bad migrations, Fame also declines, so abandon these six. These six are the cause of bad migrations, therefore bad migrations are named after the result. In the sutra it is said: These six sons of a householder are the gates of bad migrations. Thus, here it is explained that they are all possessed by one sinful friend. The swiftly moving sun and moon are friendly to all, Familiar and constantly dwelling, afflicted by anger, The land is gentle, becoming new and fresh, Seeing all beings become friends. The sun and moon do not remain in one continent, but circle Mount Meru every day, just as the beings of the four continents rejoice, so too those who practice according to the Dharma, wherever they are, when they become familiar and friendly with beings, they move to another place.
