Because there is no one else, King Spyi bo skyes became a Chakravartin king through the merit of offering seven grains of beans to the Buddha who sees all, and having overcome the power of the four great kings, he obtained the power to share the seat with Indra in the thirty-three realms. However, it is the nature of things that wisdom disturbed by sin in the world makes the pure fruit small. As soon as a mind of envy arises towards Indra, one falls from that position like a falling star, but it can still be restored. As it is said in the Wish-Fulfilling Tree: "Unfamiliarity destroys wisdom, expanding pride destroys wealth, extreme hatred destroys goodness, and attachment destroys true sublimity." Thus he lamented. Those who have not accumulated merit in the past go to places where there is no leisure. Even if they obtain a human body, their consciousness is like twilight in the direction of Dharma, but in the direction of non-Dharma, all kinds of subtle details gather, thus destroying wisdom. Some people have a little faith, but obstacles such as illness and harm arise, and they are deceived by relatives, associates, evil friends, and sinful spiritual friends, and thus turn to the desires of this life. In short, being extremely attached to wealth and enjoyment, mainly engaging in actions contrary to Dharma, and having no regret for this, destroys true sublimity. Being jealous, competitive, arrogant, and proud of one's lineage, appearance, and power destroys wealth. Because good thoughts do not abide properly, one is always thinking of tormenting others, and even harming birds and wild animals, which is the root cause of the decline of merit, and destroys all good deeds. In short, even if one engages in the three studies of hearing, thinking, and meditation, one becomes an accomplice of afflictions; even if one accumulates a little merit, one mainly relies on fame, or aims only at dispelling obstacles, or aims at peace and the happiness of gods and humans, or mixes with sinful actions; or else in an impure field, one associates with a king of sinful deeds, a heretic, one who torments beings, and one who creates sectarian conflicts.

Those who like to send people to the side of solitary practitioners are a sign of not having accumulated merit in the past. Conversely, those who are not disturbed by karma, afflictions, and sinful thoughts, have few internal and external obstacles, and even when doing good, possess discriminating wisdom and are able to use their minds, are signs of having accumulated merit. To illustrate this, (the text says:) "Without practice, intelligence declines; with increasing pride, wealth declines; with extreme hatred, virtuous deeds decline; with attachment, true sublimity declines. Therefore, wisdom that is not disturbed by karma, afflictions, and sins, and that can be used with the power of wisdom and fortune, is said in the Ornament for Clear Realization to be a sign of accumulating merit." This is connected to the source of the scripture. Therefore, merit is a common and special quality of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, so what need is there to say for those sentient beings who seek special status? As it says in the Jataka tales, King named Power of Clarity had five sons named Form Power, Diligence, Skill, Wisdom, and Merit Power, each named after their respective qualities. Each of the five sons held to and praised their own qualities. At that time, the youngest, Merit Power, said, "Without wisdom, form, skill, and diligence are of no use, and although having wisdom is beneficial, wisdom cannot be obtained without merit, so merit is beneficial." It also says, "Through merit, one obtains beauty; through merit, one possesses morality; through merit, one obtains glory; likewise, one becomes wealthy. Through merit, one obtains wisdom; through merit, one obtains mind control; through merit, one obtains good results." And so on, although all the goodness of samsara and nirvana is praised as the power of merit, the brothers each hold to their own views and do not acknowledge this. After that, in order to measure their respective qualities, they hid their princely status and went to other countries, and so the young...
