The virtues and praises of the spiritual friend: Even if extensively praised for an eon, it is inexhaustible, therefore, one should always rely on a virtuous spiritual friend. Thus it is said. Incidentally, the faults of not relying are explained: Holding onto samsara as happiness, one cannot escape from the dangerous path of suffering. Because of ignorance of karma and its results, one holds onto the side of non-virtue. Because of being separated from extensive learning, one cannot encounter the assembly of qualities. Even if one enters the Dharma, one cannot grasp the path of liberation. One deteriorates from good Dharma, and being deceived by false appearances, all kinds of faults of deception arise. From the present, manifest Buddha, those who do not rely on the lama and are disrespectful, even the qualities of Dharma that they have obtained will deteriorate, what need is there to mention obtaining what has not been obtained? Why is that? Because holding onto Dharma is no different from Dharma, therefore, they accumulate the extremely heavy karma of abandoning the virtuous spiritual friend and abandoning the Dharma. They will suffer by wandering in the three lower realms for a long time and many times. If they are liberated from these realms, even if they are born as humans a hundred times, they will be born as blind, deaf, mute, and with incomplete faculties in a land where the name of the Three Jewels is not heard. Thus it is said. In particular, the faults of despising the virtuous spiritual friend are mentioned in the Vajrapani Abhisheka Tantra: "Bhagavan, what will be the ripening result of those who despise the teacher?" The Bhagavan said: "Vajrapani, the gods and the world will be frightened, do not speak like that. However, I will say a little, hero, listen carefully. The unbearable ones, such as the five heinous crimes, the hells that I have spoken of, are their places. There, they will spend countless eons. Therefore, in all ways, never despise them." And in the Fifty Verses on the Guru: "Those who revile the teacher will die, obscured by great ignorance, from plagues, leprosy, and all kinds of diseases, demons, epidemics, and poisons. Kings, fire, venomous snakes, water, dakinis, thieves, demons, and those with wrong views will also kill them, and then those beings will go to hell." Thus it is said. Now, it is for the sake of explaining the meaning of auspicious aspirations.

The immeasurable treasure of the river of nectar of the Mother Dharma, good intentions that penetrate the mindstream, rely on the good teacher who reveals them, from good methods, the pith instructions will not be scattered, the powerful mantra of good renunciation, strikes the obstacles that do not tire of samsara, it is a sublime aspiration endowed with four goodnesses. This is the meaning of the Ornament of Clear Realization, as it says: Good intention and good teacher, good method and good renunciation, are the characteristics of a sublime aspiration. As the teaching says: Good intention is any Dharma, which relies on the function of intention to be integrated into the mindstream, and its essence is also desire. By relying on various methods of intention or desire, the mind is subdued, therefore the Bhagavan said: Subduing the mind obtains happiness. The teacher who reveals it depends on the good teacher, therefore the teacher Hero said: If you rely on the holy ones, surrounded by mindful friends, you will abide in mindfulness, like a vine clinging to a sala tree, you will be embraced by the splendor of goodness. Whatever meaning is manifestly desired, which is accomplished easily without relying on great effort, is the path of pith instructions, but if there is no limitless sequence of methods as its companion, the pith instructions will also be scattered. For example, if one does not rely on the methods of the five practices such as generosity, one will not be able to realize the nature of the pith instruction, the Perfection of Wisdom. As it is also said in the Bodhicharyavatara: All these limbs, the Sage spoke for the sake of wisdom. Thus it is. What becomes the companion of all of these is the good intelligence of renunciation, for without renunciation, one will not turn away from samsara in the beginning. Therefore, because the swan's nourishment is diminished, in the middle one will not be angry with the virtuous friend. Finally, because one has fallen away from all paths such as faith and diligence, the path of cutting off the branches of a tree, which does not pull out the root of the subtle growth of the ocean of existence, cannot be the cause of liberation, therefore it is said in the letter to the Lama: For example, if a tree is not uprooted from its roots, even if it is cut down it will only grow again, similarly, the subtle
