Looking from somewhere, the form of a Naga was seen. The king's form was seen bowing down to the Naga. Then, the venerable Lord said: Great King, please continue to strive for the cause of merit, and you will see different sights every day. After saying this, the king, as before, made great offerings to the relics of the Thus-Gone One and to the community of monks. By listening to the Dharma with reverence, in this way, the king's form stood up, and the Naga's form bowed down to him. Eventually, the Naga's form bowed down to the king's form with all its limbs, and the king was very pleased and said: Alas! What is the fruit of offering to the Three Jewels? Look at this! The Naga dwelling in the ocean has been tamed by me and brought under my control. Even those of small wisdom, who would not worship the Buddha? For that which immediately produces fruit, who would not pay attention with their mind? Those who desire to attain greatness, both gods and humans, should correctly worship the perfect Buddha, so that birth is exhausted and there is no rebirth. After saying this, the venerable Lord, knowing that the king's merit had become powerful and that the time had come, urged: Great King, now is the time to send the copper letter to the Naga. The king, as before, sent a messenger to throw the letter into the ocean. The Naga King received the letter with the top of his head and promised to send back the previous jewels. Then, as the king prepared to send the merchants, as instructed by the venerable Lord, he wrote on the copper plate: The punishment for breaking the sacred command of the ruler of Jambudvipa is to carry your respective burdens on your shoulders and bring them here. As soon as the letter was seen, the Naga King was frightened and promised: O God, I will offer seven parasols. Thus, in the center of the city where all the people were gathered, the king was sitting on a lion throne, and the Naga King and his retinue transformed into human form, placing the jewels on their shoulders, carrying heavy burdens, and bowing down to the king's two feet. This is the merit of the Blessed One's teachings.

It is said: Merit is not destroyed by fire, nor is it frightened by wind. Merit is not soaked by water, nor can it be carried away like earth. Kings and thieves cannot steal the merit that abides. Neither men nor women can take it away. Merit is the treasure that produces happiness, it does not remain here, but follows wherever one is born. Thus it is said. Thus, merely regarding merit with respect is not just aiming for temporary happiness, but it is necessary to generate great courage to focus on the Dharma. The armor of focusing on the Dharma must be strong. The profound and vast realm of Dharma is like the king of the ocean. Whether one subdues or does not subdue the courage of wisdom, entrust it to the control of steadfast courage. Without straying from the path, one goes upon the six perfections. Our teacher also, for the sake of generating the mind for the great path of enlightenment, accumulated merit for countless eons, practiced diligently, and reached the other shore of the accumulation of supreme wisdom, thereby attaining enlightenment and becoming the protector of all sentient beings. We also, in order to accomplish that state, for the sake of being in accordance with its meaning, no matter what happens, happiness or suffering, favorable or unfavorable circumstances, even if death comes, even if encountering savages and wild animals, just as a merchant does not fear a bad land, or a captain enters the ocean, without fearing any adversity, put on the armor of courage. Whether it is the profound Dharma like the ocean, or the vast Dharma like the sky, whichever it may be, one must cut off the shrinking mind towards both, and all the faults of inferior conduct. Just like the bow of the gods, even the powerful giants of the four continents cannot draw it, even if one thinks it cannot be subdued and becomes discouraged, one must cut that off and rely on steadfast courage. For example, just as the captain Slongden wanted to dry up the ocean for the sake of jewels, and relied on constantly scooping up water with his hands and pouring it out, the unyielding courage made the dragons of the ocean afraid, and they offered jewels. Such a person goes without straying on the six perfections. The corresponding favorable conditions are the seven-branch offering and sprinkling water, etc.
