A person with beauty, who is pleasing to see, lives solely by the enjoyment of those who are gathered. A person with diligence, like a river carrying sandalwood trees with great force, which others cannot take, lives solely by the enjoyment that comes from being drawn by the great power of diligence. A person with skill lives solely by the enjoyment of receiving wages and rewards from it. A person with wisdom lives solely by the gains made by skillfully mediating between two quarreling merchants. The power of merit: when he entered the home of a poor person, due to the power of his merit, that home had a lot of wealth, grain, gold, and silver. Therefore, the poor person thought, 'This man, whom I have never seen before, has come to my house, and it is due to his power, there must be no mistake,' and so he looked at the young man with respect and also gave him great hospitality. At some time when these reputations spread everywhere, the king of that country was close to being childless and on the verge of extinction. The queen, ministers, and city leaders gathered together and discussed who should be enthroned as king, the one with the greatest merit. They immediately recognized that person and enthroned him as king. Because his merit and actions were combined, that territory also touched the state of happiness. His own father, the king, also heard about this and gave his own kingdom's power to the young man, the power of merit. Therefore, there is nothing in the world more beneficial than merit, so one should rely on special places and strive to accumulate merit, in order to ripen the fruits in this very life. What is that? One hundred years after the Teacher (Shakyamuni Buddha) passed away, in the city of Pataliputra, there appeared a Chakravartin king named King Ashoka, who ruled over a quarter of the world. At first, he enjoyed non-meritorious actions, but later he devoted himself to respecting merit. For the sake of wealth, he sent five hundred merchants to the sea to collect jewels. They also went to the sea and filled the large ship with jewels, gold, silver, diamonds, lapis lazuli, conch shells, coral, and so on, and then set off towards Jambudvipa (South Jambudvipa), in the sea...

In the middle of the sea, the dragon destroyed the great ship, and those merchants returned with only the remnants of their lives. The king cleared the pleasure garden with the root of desire and decorated it with ornaments. A vast place was prepared to display all kinds of jewels, and all the people of the city gathered to see the jewels. At that time, the merchants, possessing only a single upper garment, came to the king in a miserable state and told him the reason for this. Then, a monk named Power, as taught to the king, wrote on a copper plate: This land is protected by the sea. King, powerful Ashoka. Whoever is extremely strong and mighty, who dwells in the sea carrying treasures, let them quickly bring those to my presence. Having written this on the plate, he threw it into the sea, but the dragon, displeased with the king's words, threw the plate back to Jambudvipa. There, the messenger told the king about the situation at that time, and King Ashoka understood in his heart and pondered a method. At that time, the god of the sky said: If you make offerings to the relics of the Tathagata, like offering to the stupa of gods and humans, then with this merit increasing, your needs will be fulfilled. Other mantras and medicinal mixtures cannot do it. After speaking these verses of meaning, the king washed his hair, put on white clothes, and holding incense and garlands of flowers, etc., prayed to and invited the foremost of the ten directions with miraculous powers, making a great cry of sorrow. Immediately, sixty thousand Arhats gathered from all directions. There, the king made great offerings to the relics of the Tathagata with incense, flowers, perfumes, and ointments, etc., and made praises in verses, and also offered umbrellas to the Sangha of monks. At that time, the venerable Power said to the king: Great king, first is your body, and second is the body of the dragon, put these two beautiful bodies into a large golden container, and then you will be able to see the difference in merit directly. The king also did as he was told.
