The Bodhisattva receives teachings and makes recitation his priority, thereby possessing generosity, discipline, patience, diligence, meditation, and wisdom. Or, from whom did you hear or receive the four-line verse that possesses the accumulation of the Bodhisattva path's requisites? One should show Dharma respect to the teacher who imparted these. If one could find that teacher without wavering for as many eons as there are names, sentences, and letters taught, and serve and attend to them with all reverence and offerings, then the householder's respect for the teacher is not yet complete, let alone non-Dharma respect. In short, the decrease of one fault and the increase of one virtue of the disciple depend on relying on the Lama. Therefore, one must first be skilled in searching for and examining the Lama; secondly, one cannot be satisfied with merely finding the Lama, but must be skilled in the proper way to rely on the Lama; and finally, one cannot associate casually as if it were natural, but must learn from the conduct of the holy being and the path of liberation. As it is said in the Ornament of the Jewel Heap Sutra, the Blessed One, for the sake of seeking a virtuous friend, wandered through countless three-thousandfold worlds, even wearing down his feet to his hips. Also, as it is said in the Wise and Foolish Sutra, the king lit a thousand lamps on his own body for the sake of the Dharma; and the story of Norzang's liberation in the Tree Arrangement Sutra; the story of the Ever Weeping Bodhisattva's liberation in the Eight Thousand Verse Prajnaparamita Sutra; and like the mighty Trisong Detsen enduring all hardships for the sake of the virtuous friend and the Dharma, as he would impose upon his subjects. As it is said in the Four Dharmas Sutra: "Monks, Bodhisattvas do not abandon a virtuous friend even for the sake of their lives." Therefore, one should cherish the virtuous friend as much as one cherishes life, and learn their thoughts and actions. Thus, the Lama is said to be the embodiment of the Buddha in all the profound sutras and tantras, therefore, learning the liberation of the Lama's body, speech, and mind is equivalent to learning the liberation of the Buddha. Therefore, I too shall become like that.

Thinking thus, one spends time engaging in listening, contemplating, and meditating. In the Bodhisattva Pitaka, it says: "By engaging in practicing the instructions of the guru, one completely purifies countless billions of inexpressible aspirations; one develops such faculties, such blessings arise; one purifies such obscurations; one transcends such demons; one enters such doors of Dharma; one completes such accumulations; one completely purifies such conduct; one accomplishes such prayers; one obtains such qualities. In short, the complete perfection of all the Buddha's teachings depends on the guru and arises from the guru." Incidentally, it is also important to abandon evil friends. When a spirit who hates peace comes in the form of a human being, and relies on deceit and trickery, adhering to black Dharma, cursing the holy, and hating white Dharma, the more one associates with them, the more evil actions spread like a whirlwind, destroying the crops of virtue. The wisdom of the teachings is destroyed by foolish demonic hordes because of evil friends. Thus, although an evil friend may appear in human form, their mind is possessed by asuras. Therefore, whether directly or indirectly, relying only on those who have not subdued their minds, and whose minds are overwhelmed by deceit and trickery, whose actions of accepting and rejecting black and white are extremely contradictory, merely associating with them increases evil and diminishes virtue, so they should be abandoned. As stated in the Sutra on Mindfulness: "The cause of all desire, hatred, and ignorance is an evil friend, who is like a poisonous tree." Also, as stated in the Ratnakuta Sutra: "Who is an evil friend? It is one who diminishes virtue and engages in non-virtue. One should not rely on them, one should not associate with them, and one should not even see them." Their fault is as stated in the Nirvana Sutra: "A bodhisattva fears an evil friend more than a drunken elephant, etc., because the latter only destroys the body, while the former destroys both virtue and a pure mind." It is also stated similarly in the Chapter on the Truthful One. Of friendship
