Therefore, this teaching on blending the mind and heart with the Lama arose. As it is said in the Jataka tales: "The holy ones are not coerced by anyone, one should attend to virtue in a gentle manner. Near them, the dust of their qualities, even without intentionally seeking it, will be acquired." Not understanding this, most ignorant people draw images and meditate, but do not serve the Lama who actually resides. They say they meditate on the nature of reality, but do not understand the Lama's mind. Practice and the object of practice contradict each other, how pitiable is such ignorance! Without devotion, it is strange to expect to meet the Lama in the Bardo. In Tibet, let alone seeing the Lama as a Buddha, they don't even see them as good Geshes. Some, without any reason to see them that way, draw images, make effigies, and pretend to meditate in body and speech due to worldly fame and the chance of ignorance. They make external supports of brass, gold, silver, and so on. Most of them, with bad intentions, seek to protect their reputation. Why is that? Because their way of relating to and the direction they take are completely contrary to the Lama who actually resides. In the Ratnakuta Sutra, it is said: "All dharmas are causes and conditions, they abide at the peak of intention." Therefore, without devotion and pure perception, but generating distractions and attachment to material things, making images and so on, it is better to visualize all sentient beings as the naturally appearing images of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, which are without difference. Similarly, empowerment, instructions, and the introduction to the truth are to be received from the Lama. If one thinks that blessings and accomplishments come from some direction, that is a great mistake. Because the Lama and Yidam seen in the Bardo are the self-manifestation of devotion and clarity, the Lama does not actually come to the Bardo. For these reasons, one should first be skilled in examining the Lama, in the middle be skilled in relying on the Lama, and in the end be skilled in learning the Lama's view and conduct. Such a person will go on the right path. Thus it is said. Nowadays, the times are very degenerate. In a situation where life, wealth, Dharma, and guidance are all degenerate, it is very important to carefully examine the Lama at the beginning, and also to...

If all the qualities are not fully obtained from the master, in the "Inquiry of Good Arms Sutra," it says, "If one possesses all such qualities, it is very rare in times of strife. One with half, a quarter, or an eighth of the qualities." Here, comparing the definition of a good friend to a master is permissible. Therefore, from the qualities spoken of in the sutras and tantras, it is impossible to lack half, a quarter, or even an eighth. If one does not obtain (teachings) from such a master, then if the student is very intelligent, (the master) leads and engages him in actions that contradict the three vows, or leads him to a place that is not the right path, then for a while, one can be turned away from that path through skillful means. As the "Cloud of Jewels Sutra" says, "For virtuous Dharma, practice in accordance with it; for non-virtuous Dharma, practice in disagreement with it." And in the "Vinaya Sutra," it says, "If one speaks of what is not Dharma, it should be stopped." And in the "Jataka of the Brahmin's Birth": "To examine the conduct of his students, the teacher taught that stealing was Dharma when the Brahmin was in decline. In the world, having no wealth is the ultimate decline. Therefore, do not take the wealth of others that you have not seen." If one actually steals, one's reputation will be damaged. Stealing secretly is the religion of the Brahmins, there is no fault. After saying this, the ordinary Brahmin students, although knowing it is unreasonable, do not dare to contradict the teacher's words. The Bodhisattva did not rejoice in this, saying, "I do not approve in my heart that you have entered (this path) for that. If one knows the faults and virtues, who would abandon virtue for wealth? Even for the power of the gods, even if one abandons shame, doing things in one's heart that contradict the Dharma, it is easier to carry a clay pot, wear ragged clothes, and beg in the house of the enemy." After saying this, the teacher gave his approval. Just as it is also said in the "Jataka of Indra's Birth," "Therefore, those who practice Dharma will protect the nature of Dharma." And so on, there is much to discuss. However, if one uses these as reasons to despise and denigrate those who are regarded as masters by ordinary people, that is never reasonable. Because of the relationship with Dharma and vows, whether good or bad, one will suffer great harm, so one needs to be skillful in relying on a master. As it says in the "Gongdü Sutra," "Held as sacred"
