Shariputra, the ultimate meaning is to be realized through faith. Furthermore, in the "King of Wisdom," it is said: Whether one possesses discipline or not, whether lowly or not lowly, whether wise or not wise, whether possessing skillful means or not possessing skillful means, one will definitely achieve it. Except for those without faith and those who have not generated the mind of enlightenment. Thus it is said. In general, the qualities to be cherished are: faith, wisdom, learning, and great compassion. Respect for vows and commitments, taming the three doors of body, speech, and mind. Having a broad mind, generosity, pure perception, and a sense of shame. In the past, in the flourishing ages, many holy lamas and great accomplished ones appeared, and disciples also arose with qualities more wondrous than others. The lama's compassion and realization, and the disciples' immeasurable devotion, like a cow leading its calf, through the connection of whey and milk, many attained the accumulation of qualities as full as a vase through pure faith alone. But now, in this degenerate age, it is difficult for such causes, conditions, and interdependent connections to gather from all directions. The qualities of disciples are also such that, in addition to having faith, if there is no wisdom, one cannot understand the essence of the Dharma; if there is no learning, one cannot distinguish between Dharma and non-Dharma; if there is no compassion, even if one practices the Great Vehicle, one will stray into the paths of hearers and solitary realizers; if one does not cherish vows and commitments, it is like taking medicine but mistaking it for poison; if the three doors are not pacified, a rain of faults and downfalls will fall; if there is no broad-mindedness, one cannot associate with Dharma friends, neighbors, and spiritual friends; if one does not possess generosity, the accumulation of merit will be blocked; if there is no pure perception, appearances will arise as enemies; if there is no shame and embarrassment, one cannot learn the ways of the noble ones. Therefore, one should always examine one's own faults and disregard the faults of others, rely on a virtuous spiritual friend, and follow the Dharma, for this is a great gain. Because I often reflect on myself, thinking that I am lacking in these qualities of a disciple. One should remember the biographies and qualities of the holy beings who appeared in past times who relied on spiritual friends. As it is said in the "Inquiry of Anavatapta's Son": Bodhisattvas should serve the Khenpo and

One should generate the mind of enlightenment like the earth. As the mind of enlightenment generated in this way is a compounded phenomenon, if one repeatedly cultivates it with the proximate cause that one's own mind is capable of, then even if the disciple's qualities initially only have one aspect, later on, one will become complete oneself. How to cultivate it? By protecting the lama extremely, like a wise person; not getting angry at instructions and rebukes, like a noble horse; like a boat, abandoning weariness towards going and coming; like a bridge, bearing all good and bad; like a blacksmith's anvil, enduring all heat and cold; listening like instructions, like a servant; abandoning pride, like a broom; abandoning arrogance, like a castrated bull. "Relying on the lama," it is said in the scriptures. Furthermore, the merchant's son Norzang relied on one hundred and twelve spiritual friends, as stated in the biography of Paljung: "Son of lineage, bodhisattvas who are embraced by spiritual friends will never fall into the lower realms. Always looking at the face of the spiritual friend, like a virtuous son; not getting angry at the lama's instructions and rebukes, like a dog; not being weary of going and coming, like a boat; bearing all good and bad, like a bridge; enduring all the suffering of heat and cold, like a blacksmith's anvil." Similarly, it is said in the sutra: "One should rely on the spiritual friend with the mind of listening to the lama's instructions, like a servant. One should rely on the spiritual friend with the mind of being agreeable to us, like a servant. One should rely on the spiritual friend with the mind of abandoning pride, like a broom. One should rely on the spiritual friend with the mind of abandoning arrogance, like a castrated bull." And also, in the Gandavyuha Sutra, it is said: "Son of lineage, you should generate (bodhicitta) with the mind of not being weary of all burdens towards the spiritual friend, like (enduring burdens); with the vajra-like mind that cannot be broken by all harms; with the mind of a disciple who does not contradict all words; with the mind of a servant who listens to all instructions; with the mind of a castrated bull without arrogance." Thus it is said. If there is wealth, offer to the Fourth Jewel (the guru); the service and attendance performed by body and speech will never be wasted. Of the three satisfactions
