Even if one obtains (a human body), one will be reborn with incomplete faculties, etc., because the opportunity to enjoy the fruits of great karma has matured and the time has come. As it is said in the chapter on hells: For those who are great in virtue, who have done great harm, who have killed their parents and teachers, they will surely suffer in Avici hell for a kalpa. In that fierce fire, the body and speech, even the bones will turn to ashes. Because there is no time for happiness, therefore it is said to be Avici hell. Thus, for those who are great in virtue, who abandon and slander the supreme Dharma, and who break their vows, it is said that they will be reborn in Avici hell. Thus, the heat of the fire of these eight great hells is also seven times hotter than the previous one, just like the difference between ordinary firewood, sandalwood, and the fire at the end of the kalpa. As it is said in the "Distinction of Actions": Ordinary firewood, sandalwood, and the end of the kalpa, and the hells, the fires are also in order, and the suffering increases sevenfold in the same way. The feeling also becomes seven times coarser, and the suffering also increases seven times. Now, in order to explain the surrounding and neighboring hells of these. From the suffering itself, breath is exhaled, born from conceptual thought, the doors of the neighboring hells open, countless impure fire pits, dense rotten corpse mud, and forests of swords, rivers without shores, and hail from the Lord of Death strike. Thus, on each of the four sides of each of the eight great hot hells of beings, there are fire pits, rotten corpse mud, forests of sword leaves, and rivers without shores, each group of four exists in a surrounding manner, and is called the sixteen neighboring hells. As it is said in the commentary on the "Friendly Letter": These four outer hells, like the doors of all sentient beings' hells, abide in order, therefore, each of the eight great hot hells that will be explained has sixteen neighboring hells. So it is said. When the karma to be experienced has mostly lessened, one will feel that the doors are opening in all directions, and the appearance of escaping will arise, mistaking the ashes for a stream of water and jumping in, this situation is described in the "Mindfulness Sutra": After going there, the thought of a stream of water arises, and as soon as one crosses it, the flesh up to the waist is burned, and the bones are also shattered and broken, and then one is revived, and the shore is the place where one used to play.

As it says, "Protected by the son of Indra," on the path to approach it, iron-maned dogs chase, and in the pit filled with impure burning fire and sharp-edged stones, when the knee sinks into it, the skin and flesh are torn, and when lifted, one experiences the suffering of rebirth. As it says in the "Letter to a Friend": "The many dogs swollen with piled-up manes, tear the body with long, sharp vajra tips, on the banks of the immeasurable river filled with ash and flames, they chase in unbearable sharp-edged gravel." So it is. The swamp of decay is, in the great outer swamp, from a young age, creatures with white bodies and black heads with sharp beaks pierce the skin, and tormented by suffering, one becomes unable to move the body, but like a trap of karma, one is caught like a bird of life, as the former says: "Some tiny wriggling worms, whose groups numb the body and cause confusion, those who are caught in the net of karma and feel pain, cannot even move and yet live." So it is. The grove like swords is, if one passes through the fire of embers, the swamp of decay, and the great road filled with razor edges, breaking through the barriers, it appears as a green forest, as explained in the commentary on the "Letter to a Friend." There, running to seek refuge, the wind arising from karma shakes the trees, and all the leaves fall like a rain of weapons, the body is slashed, and one can only cry out, separated from other friends. As it says in the "Letter to a Friend": "The body wearied by the unbearable torment of a thousand suns, seeing the dense green-leaved trees, goes there, and the leaves of those trees fall like hundreds of weapons, slashing the body, and there one dwells for a long time with smoke as a companion, losing friends." So it is. The immeasurable river is, as it says in the commentary on the "Letter to a Friend": "The unbearable saline hot spring, called the immeasurable river, surrounds the edge of the grove of sword-like leaves, like a hellish abyss." So it is said, and all the paths there are also on razor ground, and from above, the swords of the willow grove also appear, so from the road it looks like razor ground, but its essence is the immeasurable river, like falling into boiling weapons filled with saline alkali.
